The upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday” appears set to resemble one of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s top films, “Captain America: Civil War,” but it seems ready to disband Team Cap in the process. While not officially an Avengers movie, “Captain America: Civil War” is often considered an Avengers film in disguise due to its impressive lineup of MCU superheroes, excluding only Hulk and Thor. This extensive cast is largely responsible for its stunning success, placing it among the MCU’s highest-earning films with a global box office of $1.1 billion.
Marvel Studios is aiming to duplicate and possibly outdo their past success with the film titled “Avengers: Doomsday“. Fortunately, being an Avengers movie gives it a strong foundation; even the lowest-earning Avengers movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), “Avengers: Age of Ultron“, made a substantial $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office. One reason why Avengers movies (and “Civil War“) are so captivating is due to the recurring theme of conflicts within the MCU’s vibrant group of superheroes. However, I find it challenging to reconcile with the idea that “Avengers: Doomsday” might shatter long-standing alliances.
How The MCU Has Set Up A Second Avengers Civil War
There Is Friction Between The Avengers And The New Avengers
In the upcoming MCU films of 2025, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is setting up a potential conflict among its superheroes by hinting at a second civil war. In “Captain America: Brave New World,” the lead character grapples with his new responsibilities but resists President Thaddeus Ross’s proposal to create a fresh team of Avengers, concerned about government control. However, events take an unexpected turn when Sam Wilson becomes more amenable to the idea following President Ross demonstrating the necessity of an Avengers group to face certain threats. Eventually, Sam Wilson and Joaquin Torres discuss forming a new, independent team outside of the government’s jurisdiction.
Although it’s yet undetermined who will team up with Captain America and Falcon in the upcoming MCU’s Avengers group, Marvel Studios has unexpectedly hinted that the Thunderbolts may not be as originally presented. In a surprising twist, it was disclosed that the asterisk on Thunderbolts concealed their actual identity – they are in fact the New Avengers, rebranded by CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Later confirmed by Marvel Studios, the New Avengers were officially recognized as a government-funded version of the team.
In the final scene after the credits, it was disclosed that this situation has led to tension between the New Avengers and Sam Wilson’s group of Avengers. During a discussion at their new headquarters, which is the old Avengers Tower, the New Avengers acknowledged that Sam Wilson had trademarked the Avengers name and was taking legal action against the government-supported newcomers. Although this conflict isn’t as intense as the one portrayed in Captain America: Civil War, it brings back a rivalry between heroes that stems from government control.
Sam & Bucky Will Now Be On Opposite Sides Of An Avengers Civil War
They Originally Fought On The Same Side
Now, these two characters who used to battle alongside Captain America find themselves on opposite sides. In “Captain America: Civil War”, Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson were invaluable allies of Captain America during his resistance against the Sokovia Accords, which aimed to govern superhero actions. However, life has taken an unexpected turn as Bucky Barnes joins a government-approved team, while Sam Wilson remains independent, demonstrating his worthiness to continue carrying the Captain America torch.
Watching the evolution of Sam and Bucky’s friendship in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially since Steve Rogers’ departure in “Avengers: Endgame,” is quite poignant. Initially, there was a hint of friendly rivalry between them during “Captain America: Civil War.” However, their bond strengthened significantly in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and Bucky played a supportive role as Sam’s friend in “Captain America: Brave New World.” The raw emotion Bucky shows when reacting to Sam’s rejection of the New Avengers is tough to swallow, and it carries an extra emotional punch given his past experiences.
Bucky’s Role Is Even Weirder Given His MCU History
Bucky Barnes Has Joined The Same Side As Iron Man
Sam Wilson, or Falcon, was just as ready as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, to stand up against government interference in “Captain America: Civil War”. However, it could be argued that he is more suited to conform because he’s a war veteran and he even collaborated with the President during the first part of “Captain America: Brave New World”. On the other hand, while Bucky Barnes, or Winter Soldier, is also a war veteran, he was the main focus in “Captain America: Civil War”, which was a significant factor that prompted Captain America to take a stand against his fellow Avengers.
As a seasoned movie critic, I must admit that the latest turn of events in this on-screen rivalry leaves me with a sense of personal investment. By taking on a pivotal role within the government-backed faction of this feud, Bucky Barnes seems to be echoing Iron Man’s actions at best and implicitly endorsing his viewpoint at worst. The profound emotional divide between these two characters, highlighted in “Captain America: Civil War,” where we learn that Bucky, as the Winter Soldier, was responsible for Iron Man’s parent’s death, makes this new development oddly disconcerting, especially given Bucky’s unusual standing within this power dynamic.
Sam’s Avengers Could Still Have One Other Team Cap Member
One Team Cap Member Has been Confirmed For Avengers: Doomsday
The majority of characters involved in the central conflict depicted in “Captain America: Civil War” have either stepped away or passed on, leaving only a small number to take up roles in future team disputes. Interestingly, among the cast members confirmed for “Avengers: Doomsday,” it is only Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man who appeared in “Captain America: Civil War.” In this earlier appearance, Ant-Man decided to join Captain America’s rebellion because of his admiration for Cap and his ability to challenge established authority.
Captain America: Civil War Participants’ Current Status | ||
---|---|---|
Team | MCU Hero | Current Status |
Team Cap | Steve Rogers/Captain America | Retired |
Sam Wilson/Captain America | Active | |
Bucky Barnes | Active | |
Scott Lang/Ant-Man | Active | |
Clint Barton/Hawkeye | Retired | |
Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch | Deceased | |
Team Iron Man | Tony Stark/Iron Man | Deceased |
James Rhodes/War Machine | Unknown | |
Vision | Unknown | |
Peter Parker/Spider-Man | Active | |
Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow | Deceased | |
T’Challa/Black Panther | Deceased |
It appears that Ant-Man will gladly rejoin Sam Wilson’s version of the Avengers again due to their past collaborations, his respect for the Captain America role, and his overall enthusiasm to be part of the team. In contrast, although T’Challa has sadly passed away, it seems more plausible for Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, to side with Captain America, given that Wakanda is at odds with Valentina, the creator of the New Avengers. Furthermore, it’s unlikely for Shuri to fight under another nation’s banner.
Two additional individuals might team up with the New Avengers, tipping the scales. War Machine, historically aligned with U.S. interests, seems likely to keep battling on behalf of the American government. On the other hand, Spider-Man, who was more independent in “Captain America: Civil War,” could potentially side with either group. However, neither Don Cheadle nor Tom Holland have been confirmed for the cast of “Avengers: Doomsday” as of now.
