As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher with a penchant for dark narratives, I can confidently say that Joe Goldberg from Netflix’s You is not my idea of a dream character or a role model. This character’s antics are downright chilling, and it takes a certain level of twisted genius to keep me hooked despite his creepy actions.

It seems that the character of Joe Goldberg, often hailed as the internet’s favorite stalker, may have met his equal in the fifth season of Netflix’s You. The series is based on Caroline Kapnes’ novels and follows Joe (played by Penn Badgley) who some fans describe as a romantic, but the truth is that Joe is actually a stalker, menacing individual, and a cold-hearted murderer. Throughout the show’s four seasons, we delve into Joe’s mind as he grapples with the guilt of his actions…yet still persists in them.

In 2023, numerous viewers believed that Season 4 marked the end of the series. Tormented by remorse, Joe contemplated suicide by leaping from the Royal Victoria Dock into the River Thames, London. However, an unexpected turn of events in the last episode revealed Joe was still alive and up to his old tricks. With a partner as twisted as himself, Kate (played by Charlotte Ritchie), Joe now possesses the funds and capabilities to travel and act freely.

Joe Goldberg Is Very Much the Villain in You

Initially, when Badgley’s character debuted on Netflix in 2018, viewers developed a soft spot for him amidst his unsettling behaviors such as stalking, theft of personal items, and hacking accounts. Despite these questionable actions, the captivating performance and skillful writing of the show made viewers unwittingly support Joe on his bloody pursuit of love. However, as the series unfolded, audiences have grown to recognize Joe’s manipulative nature, now viewing him as the psychopathic killer he truly is.

Fans might have been devastated if Joe had perished earlier in the series, yet by Season 4, they found themselves secretly hoping for his demise. However, it wasn’t because they loved the character that they didn’t want him to die; instead, they felt it would be too kind a punishment for such an odious individual.

From the very beginning of the character Joe Goldberg’s portrayal, actor Penn Badgley was acutely aware that he was playing a deeply malicious and reprehensible role. Unlike many audiences who have only recently begun to scrutinize Joe objectively, Badgley has consistently felt that the character does not deserve a happy ending. In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2019, he expressed this sentiment, stating that despite Joe’s triumphs in each season (either by winning over or killing his love interest), his psychotic behavior only serves to draw him to a new attachment and obsession. Badgley understood the character’s dark nature from the start, explaining:

“It’s not plausible to think that finding the right partner would make Joe happy, given his past actions as a murderer.”
