In a matter of just a few months, we’ll be seeing the next installment from the DC movie series, titled “Superman” directed by James Gunn, set to debut in July and marking the start of the theatrical journey for the DC Universe franchise. The first trailer for Superman was unveiled in December, and this week, an extended preview was shown to CinemaCon attendees. Since then, footage from this nearly-five-minute sneak peek has been made available to the public. It’s safe to say that Clark Kent’s canine companion Krypto is the one who steals the spotlight, but there are two other significant scenes in this preview that I feel it’s important to discuss.
Actually, before I get into that, watch the new Superman preview below if you haven’t already:
In this lengthy sequence, Krypto, more often than not, drags an injured Clark towards the Fortress of Solitude for treatment by its robots. Contrary to what was depicted in the December trailer, we discover that Krypto initially proves uncooperative, jumping on top of Superman and nipping at his foot and sleeve before ultimately grabbing onto his cape. This space dog is certainly a handful, but he’s still a good boy. He receives an impressive 12/10 for his efforts.
Following the Krypto segment, the sneak peek concluded by showcasing additional scenes from the trailer, some of which had been slightly extended. One scene in particular stood out to me – it seemed like Superman was shedding tears over Alan Tudyk.

Four mechanical beings from the planet Krypton, each identified by a number, recover Superman (Clark/Kal-El) when his pet dog Krypto brings him to the Fortress of Solitude. These beings administer an intense dose of yellow sunlight to aid in Superman’s recovery from injuries. Among these robots, #4 is voiced by Alan Tudyk, a voice actor known for portraying Doctor Phosphorous, Clayface, and Will Magnus in “Creature Commandos.” It was announced last fall that Tudyk would be providing the voice for Superman, and it’s my belief that he voices Kelex in this context.
In 1986’s “The Man of Steel” #1 comic, John Byrne designed a robot that was also portrayed in live-action in the 2013 film “Man of Steel”. It’s likely that the character Alan Tudyk plays in this movie, if it is indeed Kelex, is the same robot that Clark Kent is seen crying over. One might wonder why Clark would cry for a robot. If the movie stays true to its source material, then Kelex is the primary caretaker of the Fortress of Solitude, meaning he’s been acquainted with Clark for quite some time. This could explain why our superhero may have formed an emotional bond with this robot more so than others.
What divided Kelex into two parts? And isn’t it possible to mend him using technology available at the Fortress of Solitude? Or is this not actually Kelex, leading us to wonder why Superman appears so distraught about its damage? We’ll discover the truth when Superman hits theaters on July 11.
What caused Kelex to split in two? Can’t he be fixed with the tech at the Fortress of Solitude? Or is this not really Kelex, making us curious as to why Superman seems so upset about it being broken? We’ll learn more when Superman comes out on July 11.
