A Long, Radiant River shares a common crime narrative structure, featuring elements such as a potential serial killer, a diligent police officer grappling with domestic struggles and a personal grievance, but it’s in the details where both divine grace and temptation reside. Characters are genuinely crafted and unforgettable, skillfully brought to life. The backdrop (Kensington in Philadelphia) is vividly depicted with genuine insight and authenticity. Most significantly, the profound burden of human pain is rendered with extraordinary empathy.
Amanda Seyfried Swims Upstream in ‘Long Bright River‘
The Long Bright River is an exhilarating suspense thriller series that follows the story of Mickey, played by Amanda Seyfried, who serves as a police officer in a Philadelphia neighborhood heavily impacted by the opioid epidemic. As a string of murders unfolds within this area, Mickey starts to suspect that her past may hold some connection to these chilling cases.
Initially, Amanda Seyfried might not immediately spring to mind as a Philadelphia patrol officer and single mother due to her glamorous and conventionally attractive appearance. However, when she’s seen in a tight ponytail and uniform amidst the graffitied streets of Kensington, she transforms into Mickey Fitzpatrick. This transformation is largely due to a subtle, yet insightful and emotionally intuitive acting style that avoids excessive melodrama. Her interactions with fellow officers are straightforward; her home life with her son and grandfather has a comfortable, understated charm. Moreover, her portrayal of panic attacks seems genuinely authentic.
The initial instance of intense fear, reminiscent of debilitating doubt at the confrontation of humanity’s pain, grief, wickedness, and despair, strikes Mickey and her partner upon reaching the site of a deceased woman, one among numerous overdose casualties in the vicinity. Despite their hardened nature, the girl’s vibrant red-pink hair takes Mickey aback, causing her to momentarily lose her composure. It might seem somewhat improbable for a police officer to be struck motionless by fear upon arrival at such scenes. However, as events unfold, we discover that Mickey’s sister with the pink hair, Kelcey, has been missing for approximately a month. Likewise living on the streets and battling addiction in and out of jail, she is a stark reminder of the harsh reality they both face.
Haunted by the People We Love
In simpler terms, a dead woman on the street has darkened blood in her mouth, making it appear as though she overdosed. This is the third such case. Unfortunately, due to societal indifference and lack of pressure from influential parties, most city police departments are unlikely to investigate these cases thoroughly. This apathy is particularly evident when the victims are homeless or impoverished drug users, especially if they’re not white. There’s no immediate family seeking updates, and the general public isn’t clamoring for news about these incidents. Some people might even be glad that there will be fewer homeless individuals on the streets.
As a cinephile, I’d rephrase it like this: Instead of fitting in with the crowd, Mickey swims against the current, much like a salmon battling through a turbulent river. She’s not just another face on these streets; she’s one of the few cops who knows the names and stories of people often overlooked. Her connection to this community isn’t solely due to her sister being a part of it, but also because she was mentored by a seasoned officer, her ex-patrol partner, Truman Dawes, brilliantly portrayed by Nicholas Pinnock, who shares an exceptional chemistry with Seyfried.
Following Mickey’s covert visit to the morgue where he persuaded the pathologist to delve deeper into the case of the three homeless women who appeared deceased, his suspicions were proven correct. It wasn’t a fentanyl or heroin overdose that took their lives; instead, it was an insulin overdose. Yet, none of these women had diabetes. This chilling revelation underscores that someone is targeting vulnerable women, and Mickey’s sister might be among them. As if matters couldn’t get more complicated, Mickey is being trailed by a suspicious figure who could very well be his former violent partner.
