A standout scene has SZA’s character, Alyssa, receiving an electric shock while attempting to retrieve sneakers from a power line, and another involves both Alyssa and Keke Palmer’s character, Dreux, getting injured by a bully who strikes them with her backside. It’s simple to get engrossed in the exaggerated moments, which bear some resemblance to those found in the now seldom-seen “Friday” series. However, what might be overlooked is the film’s deep understanding and portrayal of community.
From the start, it’s clear that Dreux and Alyssa reside in an apartment building with significant damage. Due to the confined space, the inhabitants of this building have strong connections and often depend on one another in various aspects. For instance, there’s Mama Ruth (played by Vanessa Bell Calloway), a kind neighbor who sells affordable treats to her fellow residents and even offers to take Alyssa and Dreux in when their apartment is destroyed during the third act. Additionally, there’s Jameel, a local hairstylist who can quickly help someone with their hair in an emergency.

In the lead-up to this event, their neighbors lend a hand by adorning the apartment, preparing food, organizing live music, and even Jameel honors his pledge to style Dreux’s hair.
Overall, I found the feeling of everything being connected quite heartwarming and surprising, not something I anticipated from here. But I’m grateful for the experience, as it enriches the subtle sweetness of this amusing movie. This underscores the point that in a film like this, emotion should be valued equally with humor.
How Is One Of Them Days Performing At The Box Office Thus Far?
On the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, one of those movies had its cinema premiere, raking in $11.6 million during its initial three days. By Monday, it had climbed to $14 million, which is where its current domestic (and total) earnings stand. Given that the film’s budget was reportedly $14 million for a comedy, it’s tough not to admire such an achievement. It serves as a reminder for other studios about the importance of reasonable budgeting in film production.
I’m really looking forward to watching how Lawrence Lamont’s movie does in theaters over time. To be honest, I think it’s a must-see with Keke Palmer, SZA, and the rest of the cast giving outstanding performances.
