Over the weekend of March 21st, 2025, it’s shaping up to be a rather tranquil period for new movie releases, but don’t let that fool you into thinking there aren’t any exciting titles worth exploring. Of particular interest are sci-fi and horror enthusiasts who will undoubtedly be thrilled to catch the latest offering from Flying Lotus titled “Ash“, featuring Aaron Paul, a beloved figure from Breaking Bad in the lead role.
The much-debated and disputed live-action adaptation of “Snow White”, starring Rachel Zegler, is slated to make its debut in theaters. There’s a great deal of anticipation surrounding this production, with critics, commentators, and online influencers eagerly awaiting to see how the film performs.
Additionally at cinemas, “The Alto Knights” delivers as a hard-hitting crime thriller featuring Robert De Niro, while Bill Skarsgård confronts Anthony Hopkins in the suspenseful horror film titled “Locked“. This weekend, there are several intriguing titles available for streaming. Let’s discuss what should be on your watchlist this weekend, with a special focus on why “Ash” is our top recommendation.
‘Ash’ Is Set to Be a Massive Hit Among Sci-Fi Horror Fans

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve got to say that while Flying Lotus might not be a name that rolls off everyone’s tongue, his unique take on filmmaking has left quite an impression on me. His groundbreaking work, like the genre-bending Kuso, sets him apart. Then, he raised the bar even higher with one of the standout segments in the V/H/S franchise, “Ozzy’s Dungeon” for V/H/S/99.
Now, I can hardly contain my excitement because Ash will be Flying Lotus’s first significant big-screen release, and it promises to be a spectacle with an extraordinary ensemble cast. This includes Aaron Paul, best known for his stellar role in Breaking Bad, the modern-day action movie icon Iko Uwais, and Eiza González, who stole the show in Baby Driver.
In a different scenario, the character named Ash pursues a space traveler named Riya (Eiza González), who stirs awake on an alien world to discover her crew brutally murdered and her recollections erased. As she maneuvers through this strange terrain, complications arise when another astronaut, Brion (Aaron Paul), surfaces, asserting he responded to a distress signal. Suspicious of her new ally, Riya is left grappling with growing doubts about Brion, her fractured memory, and a potentially dangerous extraterrestrial environment. Although the narrative may seem familiar, the trailer below should excite fans eager to see Ash on the big screen.
Other Movies to Check Out This Weekend
For theatergoers this weekend, there are alternatives beyond just Ash. Despite the ongoing disputes and poor box office performance of Snow White, MovieWeb’s Julian Roman commended the film in his review, particularly highlighting Rachel Zegler’s exceptional talent, saying her “vocal range, dance, and acting skills are undeniably impressive.” Meanwhile, Barry Levinson’s The Alto Knights offers Robert De Niro a chance to portray two mobster roles as Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. Our full review of this film is available here. Lastly, director David Yarovesky, known for Night Books and Brightburn, aims to create a chilling psychological horror story with Locked. With Bill Skarsgård taking on Anthony Hopkins in a cunning cat-and-mouse game, who wouldn’t be eager to watch?
Fancy spending the weekend at home instead? There’s a fresh batch of new releases and films streaming now! The Oscar-nominated film “Sing Sing” has arrived on Max. If you’re into action, Netflix is streaming “Den of Thieves 2,” with critic Greg Archer pointing out that the buddy cop angle was effective in moving the franchise forward; you can read his review here. For those who enjoy a touch of fantasy and opera, Hulu will be offering “O’Dessa” this weekend. Critic Will Sayre suggests that this film is on its way to becoming a future cult classic.
