Although I’ve always held a deep affection for his memorable performances, it’s his debut role in the 1984 action comedy “Top Secret!” that truly resonates with me. To be clear, I’m a big fan of action movies because there are just so many options available. But when it comes to comedies that keep me laughing from start to finish, the selection seems much more limited. In fact, only three come to mind right away: “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle”, “This Is Spinal Tap”, and “Top Secret!”.

The one you just saw doesn’t fit the norm for me since I generally don’t enjoy parody films, unless they’re produced by The Wayans’ family. Moreover, spy movies aren’t my cup of tea either. Yet, this one is so hilarious from start to finish that it never fails to make me chuckle whenever I watch it.

The jokes in this movie are consistently effective and amusing. From Kilmer’s painting on a train, which turned out smeary, to the absurd yet exhilarating action sequences, to the overall rhythm of the film, “Top Secret!” is nothing short of uproariously funny.

Essentially, much of this revolves around Kilmer’s readiness to join in on the humor, as well as his exceptional comic rhythm. In essence, while Heat primarily features him, Top Secret! is wholly Kilmer and it’s downright hilarious throughout.

But The Action In It, While Silly, Is Still Really Exciting

This film has another intriguing aspect. Despite it being a zany comedy, I’m surprisingly drawn into its action sequences. It doesn’t resemble films like _Hot Shots!_ (or the exceptional sequel _Hot Shots! Part Deux_), which were intentionally mocking action movies such as _Rambo III_.

Instead, mimicking the style of spy flicks, Top Secret! must adhere to the conventions typical of such films, featuring characters engaging in physical combat for humorous results, finding themselves in predicaments that lead to laughter, and exchanging fire in a highly amusing manner.

Though I frequently find myself chuckling until I cry, I’m equally captivated because they manage the action sequences exceptionally well, from a genuine admirer’s perspective.

Each blast of energy is accompanied by a comedic element, yet the action remains captivatingly intense. It’s likely due to the swift pace, which gives the film a more action-driven rather than humor-driven feel at certain moments.

As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that finding a thrill in a film featuring characters in cow costumes during the climax might seem peculiar to some, but trust me, “Top Secret!” is absolutely exhilarating!

Looking At Kilmer’s Entire Career, Top Secret! Really Proves He Was The Full Package

Kilmer appeared in numerous films, and his filmography clearly indicates that he was a true cinematic legend. While some of his work is widely recognized, there are also lesser-known movies like “Thunderheart,” “The Island of Dr. Moreau” (which I might someday write about, just to discuss Marlon Brando in an ice bucket), and “Deja Vu.

To fully grasp the range of talents that Kilmer displayed throughout his career, take a look at his debut film, “Top Secret!”, and compare it to his latest, “Top Gun: Maverick”. This should give you an overview of the spectrum of what he brought to his acting portfolio.
