As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from Oscar-winning masterpieces to cinematic disasters that somehow managed to top the charts. The latest addition to this peculiar club is none other than “Your Fault,” or “Culpa Tuya” as it’s known in its native Spanish.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I’ve got to hand it to Amazon MGM Studios – they truly know how to keep their exclusive movies captivating! Just recently, “Your Fault” (or “Culpa Tuya” in its original Spanish) has managed to dethrone the holiday action blockbuster “Red One” on Prime Video’s global chart. The sequel to the 2023 hit, “My Fault” (originally “Culpa Mía”), premiered on December 27, 2024, and just like its predecessor, it debuted at No.1 on the streamer’s chart. However, it’s also been receiving quite a bit of criticism from film critics this time around.
It appears that the pattern of critically panned yet popular original movies on streaming services isn’t likely to change as we approach 2025. A film like Your Fault illustrates this trend perfectly. In 2023, My Fault received a dismal 0% Tomatometer rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but surprisingly garnered an 86% approval rating from viewers. Remarkably, it became a hit on Prime Video. This extraordinary achievement led Amazon MGM Studios to quickly greenlight two sequels.
Under the guidance of director Domingo González, the film “Your Fault” is inspired by the second book in Mercedes Ron’s “Culpables” series. Originally a Wattpad story, it grew into a trilogy of novels that have gained massive popularity online. This built-in audience promises to eagerly watch the adaptation. Yet, film adaptations often face criticism due to thin storylines, leaving viewers unenthused and disengaged by the final outcome.
Is ‘Culpa Tuya’ a Bad Movie?
It’s worth noting that the success of a movie and its quality aren’t always directly proportional. Sometimes, poor movies can rake in big bucks at the box office, while great films may struggle to attract large audiences. As for Culpa Tuya, it appears that the criticism hasn’t been as harsh as it was for Culpa Mia, but the reviews are only slightly better.
For individuals who’ve invested in the story, “Culpa Tuya” persists in exploring the romantic relationship between step-siblings Noah (Nicole Wallace) and Nick (Gabriel Guevara). This tale carries on traditional themes of family conflicts, taboo love, and a generous dose of other common romantic drama elements. Critics often point out that both “Culpa” films, along with similar Wattpad adaptations, tend to skim over relationship complexities and lack substantial character development. However, it’s hard to argue against their success on streaming platforms. “Culpa Tuya” is just another example of this trend that continues to thrive.
Out of the scant reviews available for the film (a common occurrence with streaming sequels), Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian provides a concise summary, stating:
This Spanish romantic-comedy, which some might find peculiar and woodenly acted, is the second installment of a planned trilogy. Surprisingly, it’s garnered impressive ratings on Amazon Prime Video, even though it makes a daytime soap opera appear as refined as an Ingmar Bergman film by comparison.
For devoted fans of the series, who have eagerly supported the success of “Culpa Tuya,” it’s likely that we will conclude the trilogy with “Culpa Nuestra” towards the end of 2025, given its current chart-topping status.
