YouTube is set to broadcast an NFL game globally, without charge, marking a substantial broadening of its partnership with the football league.
YouTube along with the NFL has announced that they’ll broadcast the Week One international game on September 5th, which is set to occur in São Paulo, Brazil. The Los Angeles Chargers have been confirmed as one of the teams participating, and their opponent will be unveiled on Wednesday.
The upcoming game is set to be the initial NFL match streamed for free on YouTube, marking it as a unique event since YouTube holds the premium rights to out-of-market NFL Sunday Ticket packages. With the NFL focusing on expanding its deals with streaming partners, it has emphasized reach and audience size. No other streaming platform can match YouTube’s extensive reach, boasting over one billion users worldwide.
For a while, the NFL has partnered with established broadcasting corporations such as ESPN, NBC Sports, CBS Sports, and Fox Sports. However, the deal with Amazon Prime Video marked a significant shift in these partnerships, as Amazon offered an unparalleled level of stability and reach in streaming content that was not feasible before.
Previously, the NFL unveiled plans for exclusive Christmas Day games on Netflix, a deal that’s since been extended. However, YouTube has become a key focus for the league. This is not only due to Sunday Ticket, but also because they aim to captivate younger audiences and fans by granting top content creators access to the games.
As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming global expansion of this near-universal game. Although it’s not quite global yet (there are a few exceptions), this expansion will certainly put YouTube to the test, pushing its boundaries to generate interest for a game that aspires for worldwide recognition and fanbase.
On top of that, the league has decided to make use of their in-house studio, NFL Films, to create more compelling documentaries and entertainment content for their own platforms, along with other streaming services and networks. This move not only strengthens YouTube’s content portfolio but also showcases the league’s commitment to delivering high-quality content that resonates with a global audience.
As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that, in line with NFL regulations, the YouTube game will air on traditional television sets within the respective home markets of each team. However, it’s important to note that this streaming option won’t be accessible in a handful of countries, such as Canada.
YouTube has secured a multi-year agreement to air the annual Super Bowl Flag Football match involving content creators, celebrities, and musicians, along with other global flag football games.
