Six years after the release of Disco Elysium, I’m thrilled to share that ZA/UM, its creators, have unveiled their next venture – an espionage RPG rich in psychological depth. Yet, this exciting news is overshadowed by ongoing controversy, as none of the original creators from Disco Elysium are part of this new project, following a high-profile disagreement with the studio’s investors.
Project [C4] features you as an undercover operative for a powerful global entity. Your tasks entail stealthy assignments akin to those of a Hitman, maneuvering through a labyrinth of secrets, and making crucial decisions that may result in either your demise or exposure.
In their description, ZA/UM portrays the gameplay style as a blend of nerve-wracking dice rolls and significant dialogue choices, with the sense of failure serving as a crucial element of the overall experience. This mechanism resonates favorably with enthusiasts of Disco Elysium.
In this game, participants, referred to as ‘Operants’, will be granted the power to employ mind-altering substances. These substances can either eliminate, modify, or influence aggressive incidents, thus emphasizing the game’s core ideas of deceit and authority.
As stated in its summary, PROJECT [C4] does not aim to emulate James Bond. Rather, it finds its influence in the dark, ethically ambiguous storylines reminiscent of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Oldboy.
The narrative will feature changing loyalties, deceit, and mental battles, which are key elements. However, the creators at ZA/UM strive to distinguish it from typical spy tales.
While I’m thrilled about the news of PROJECT [C4], I can’t help but feel a sense of uncertainty given the departure of Robert Kurvitz, the mastermind behind Disco Elysium‘s captivating narrative and world-building. His team and him were the heart and soul of the game, and their exit from ZA/UM, due to disagreements with investors, leaves me wondering about the future direction of the project.
This transition has led to a wave of criticism on the internet, as fans are urging ZA/UM to return the Disco Elysium rights to its original creators. These criticisms can be seen in the comments section of PROJECT [C4]’s YouTube videos and also in ZA/UM’s other social media platforms.
As project C4 progresses, there are lingering doubts about whether ZA/UM can replicate the same enchantment without its original founders, or if the studio itself has transformed into the very thing that Disco Elysium previously criticized.
