Dr. John Dorian is returning for duty: Zach Braff has agreed to reprise his role for the revival of the TV show “Scrubs,” which is currently being developed by ABC.
In the upcoming reboot of “Scrubs,” Zach Braff will once again take on the role of John (also known as J.D.), the main character and narrator throughout much of the show’s initial run. ABC officially announced plans for a revival in December, following years of expressed interest from the series creator Bill Lawrence, Zach Braff, and other cast members to reunite.
ABC and 20th Television, which is producing the reboot, declined comment.
During a Scrubs reunion at the ATX TV Festival in 2022, Lawrence expressed, ‘We’re definitely going to do it.’ He advised, ‘Seize opportunities to collaborate with people you enjoy being around. When such chances present themselves, don’t hesitate and go for it.’
Even though everyone involved was eager, the journey towards the ABC project wasn’t simple due to Lawrence’s busy schedule. At present, Lawrence has a comprehensive contract with Warner Bros. TV and is managing four series – ‘Shrinking’, ‘Bad Monkey’, the resurgence of ‘Ted Lasso’ on Apple TV+, and an HBO comedy featuring Steve Carell. Fortunately, WBTV made an exception in his deal, enabling him to work on ‘Scrubs’ at 20th (previously known as Touchstone TV, the original producer). However, it’s important to note that if ‘Scrubs’ gets picked up as a series, Lawrence won’t assume the role of showrunner.
Among the original Scrubs cast members, Zach Braff is the first one to take part in the ABC remake. The show originally featured Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, John C. McGinley, Neil Flynn, and Ken Jenkins as well.
Since “Scrubs” ended its original broadcast, Braff and Lawrence have consistently collaborated: Braff has taken up directing episodes for “Shrinking” and “Ted Lasso“, receiving Emmy and Directors Guild Award nominations for the latter, and has made appearances on “Bad Monkey” and “Cougar Town>”.
As a gamer, I’m about to make an appearance in “Girls Like Girls,” produced by Focus Features, and I just finished shooting for “Clean Hands.” This film is inspired by the life of Kevin Simmers, a former drug cop who became a recovery advocate, and his daughter Brooke. In terms of representation, I’m supported by CAA, Range Media Partners, and attorney Ken Richman.
