Zachary Levi is accustomed to switching roles, moving from the action-packed world of Shazam! to playing an alcoholic father trying to bond with his autistic son in The Unbreakable Boy. Upcoming projects for him include a change in mood with the thriller Hotel Tehran, where he will team up with the renowned Liam Neeson, whom Levi calls “an icon… a legend.” The script was penned by Guy Moshe, inspired by an idea from Bazzel Baz, a former CIA Intelligence Special Operations Group Officer. Levi emphasized that there’s something about Neeson that transcends the ordinary, but in reality, Neeson is much more than that.
In my perspective as a movie critic, there’s an undeniable quality in his performances that resonates deeply with audiences – a steeliness, if you will, reminiscent of the relentless character he portrayed in “Taken”. Yet, off-screen, he’s a genuine softie. He exudes warmth and has a heart as vast as the ocean, evident in his deep affection for his family. Working with him was an absolute pleasure.
For Levi, who previously felt his career didn’t meet his initial expectations, this latest role represents a shift from his previous experiences. Following his extended stint on the series “Chuck”, he donned a cape and tights for two Thor sequels and headlined the Shazam! films. However, his recent projects, including last year’s “Harold and the Purple Crayon”, have not performed well at the box office.
Liam Neeson has a long history of adapting to changes and navigating the tides of industry trends. His remarkable journey started in the 1970s, with his debut role in John Boorman’s 1981 Arthurian epic, “Excalibur.” Over more than four decades since then, Neeson has graced every kind of film and garnered a wide array of audience responses. He has undoubtedly weathered all the ups and downs, earning him the title of an icon, as Levi puts it.
In a similar vein, Neeson continues to be productive even today, an aspect that seems to resonate with Levi as well, given his numerous upcoming projects. Following a more serious role in “The Unbreakable Boy“, Levi finds himself with limited opportunities for comedy or the action-adventure style he’s been associated with lately.
Breaking Bread with Liam Neeson
As a film enthusiast, I admire Liam Neeson for his remarkable talent to separate his on-screen character from his personal life. He consistently prioritizes family values and kindness in his daily routine, which is truly inspiring.
As a film critic, I found myself privileged to collaborate with the remarkable Liam Neeson. Just as a skilled actor should, he masterfully tapped into his craft when needed, yet maintained a personal balance outside of it. His demeanor was tender, almost ethereal in its softness – a testament to his gentle spirit. Sharing meals and exchanging stories with him made for some unforgettable moments on set. In essence, working alongside Liam Neeson was an enriching journey that I will cherish.
Title “Hotel Tehran” tells a story where a band of former CIA agents aim for a major payoff. This blend of thriller and heist elements should provide ample opportunity for Levi and Neeson to showcase their acting skills. When discussing the production of “The Unbreakable Boy”, Levi shared his thoughts on filmmaking, stating, “Making a movie is like running a summer camp… You’re at a location somewhere… And we spent quality time off-camera getting to know each other, understanding one another’s energy, and then you just want to portray your character as genuinely as possible.” It seems that Levi had a similar experience working alongside Neeson.
The Unbreakable Boy is in theaters February 21.
