Zack Snyder Offers His Thoughts on David Corenswets Superman Suit

Zack Snyder Offers His Thoughts on David Corenswets Superman Suit

As a lifelong Superman fan who’s seen every iteration of the Man of Steel from George Reeves to Henry Cavill, I must say that I’m intrigued by David Corenswet’s take on the iconic character. While the suit may stir some debate among fans, it’s the storytelling and the journey of Kal-El that truly matter.

Audience members might have varying opinions regarding David Corenswet’s Superman costume, but Zack Snyder is eager to explore how the attire of the Kryptonian character will contribute to storytelling in James Gunn’s forthcoming Superman film (2025). In a recent interview, fans were allowed to ask Snyder both detailed and brief questions. One fan specifically inquired about the latest outfit for the Man of Steel (as reported by The Hollywood Handle).

“Have you noticed the latest Superman costume? Many are drawing comparisons to Henry Cavill’s version, and there’s quite a bit of curiosity about your opinions on it. Care to share any thoughts you might have?”

Snyder responded by saying:

As someone who has always been fascinated by the power of cinema, let me express my eagerness: I can’t wait to witness this movie unfold. Over the years, I’ve found that the best stories are those which captivate not only the mind but also the heart, and I have a feeling this film will do just that. The anticipation is real, and it’s not just because I’m excited; it’s because of my passion for storytelling and the life-changing experiences films have brought into my own life. So, let’s embark on this cinematic journey together!

As a long-time fan of both James Gunn and Zack Snyder’s work in the world of DC Comics, I have been eagerly following the developments in their respective projects for the DC Universe (DCU). Given my personal history with these two filmmakers, I am particularly intrigued by their apparent camaraderie and mutual respect. In an interview with CBR, Snyder expressed his enthusiasm about Gunn’s approach to the characters, stating that if they are treated with reverence and mythological accuracy, he is on board. I share this sentiment wholeheartedly, as I too believe that staying true to the essence of these iconic characters is crucial for a successful adaptation.

Regardless of what Kal-El wears, Superman’s story will be told quite differently through the eyes of Gunn in the DCU. But had Henry Cavill’s run as the Man of Steel continued in the now defunct DCEU, based on the post-credits scene in Black Adam, fans would have witnessed a big-screen adventure featuring both the Last Son of Krypton and the Champion of Kahndaq — at least in Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s world. However, Snyder had a match-up with a much more powerful being in the works for Kal.

Henry Cavill’s Planned Snyderverse Battle with Uxas

Previously this year, Zack Snyder disclosed his proposed continuation of Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel character within the DCEU following the completion of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” (2021). In a potential scenario, Superman and Black Adam (Johnson) might have engaged in a fight on the big screen. However, Snyder envisioned a significant clash between Darkseid and Superman instead, as mentioned in an interview with GQ.

“He (Cavill’s Superman) was on the verge of giving in to Anti-life, being annihilated, reversing time, and then gaining an opportunity for this battle against Darkseid. In essence, this would have marked the end of his trilogy of transformation into a guardian, and brought him back to his human state.”

In the Snyderverse and Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman, one significant challenge was that Kal-El was compelled to snap General Zod’s (played by Michael Shannon) neck in the final moments of Man of Steel (2013). Typically, Clark Kent’s super-powered persona shies away from taking lives when other options are available. However, it’s worth noting that subduing the powerful villain Darkseid might necessitate lethal force, and trapping him in the Phantom Zone was merely a temporary solution to dealing with the tyrant.

In the present, the era of the Snyderverse has ended. Previously, Henry Cavill’s Superman worked alongside characters such as Batman (portrayed by Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) in the DC Extended Universe. However, David Corenswet’s Man of Steel will be joined by characters like Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific, and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl in a new setting. Unlike the confrontation with Darkseid that was expected for Corenswet’s Superman in 2025, it will instead be Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult) who poses a challenge to him.
