As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but admire Zendaya’s journey from nearly joining the magical world of Disney’s Descendants to becoming a global superstar in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as MJ. It’s a testament to her resilience and talent that she managed to turn a seemingly disappointing audition experience into a golden opportunity, one that has catapulted her into stardom.
Zendaya, a globally recognized star, has encountered instances where she didn’t secure the roles she desired. Before her appearances in “The Greatest Showman” and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy, she had aspirations to join another popular Disney franchise, but despite numerous auditions, she wasn’t able to land a role. That particular franchise was “Descendants.”
In 2015, the movie “Descendants” made its debut, a film centered around the offspring of various well-known Disney antagonists. This popular movie led to numerous sequels and spin-offs, with the most recent one premiering on Disney+ earlier this month. When “Descendants” initially came out, Zendaya was already starring in her own Disney Channel series, “K.C. Undercover”, which ran for three seasons.
The well-known actress persistently attempted to join the Disney franchise but didn’t manage to secure any roles she auditioned for, as shared by Cornelia Frame, a former executive at Disney Channel. Interestingly, this could have unexpectedly benefited the actress significantly, according to Frame’s comments on the Magical Rewind podcast.
Zendaya made numerous attempts to secure the role in “The Descendants,” which was quite significant. It was a major opportunity she pursued relentlessly. Unfortunately, despite her persistence, it didn’t work out for her. Reflecting on this now, I can’t help but wonder if her career-defining role as Spider-Man’s girlfriend might have emerged around the same time. Life often steers us towards alternative, yet equally remarkable paths, and that seems to be what happened here.
During Frame’s comments, she praised Zendaya for her extraordinary effort during her audition. However, Frame acknowledged that sometimes, a casting director seeks something specific and another candidate simply delivers it better, resulting in Zendaya missing the role. Despite this setback, things have worked out well for Zendaya.
Will Zendaya Return in Spider-Man 4?
In our previous encounter with Zendaya in the Spider-Man universe, she had been erased from Peter Parker’s life due to Doctor Strange’s spell that concealed Holland’s Spider-Man identity across the multiverse. This conclusion for Spider-Man: No Way Home was a mix of sorrow and joy, as Parker embarked on his journey to be the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, now devoid of Aunt May, friends, and fellow Avengers.
It’s uncertain at this point how Zendaya will appear in the upcoming fourth MCU Spider-Man film. Given that details about the next movie are scarce, fans of Zendaya are hoping she’ll reprise her role as MJ, but for now, only Tom Holland’s return as the lead character is confirmed.
As a gamer, I must admit, I was quite surprised when I learned about the multidimensional journey of this actress. Contrary to what some might think, she hasn’t been idly waiting for Marvel Studios to call her up. Instead, she’s been making headlines!
