Here comes our beloved, swampland-residing ogre again, as we get a sneak peek into the initial promo clip for “Shrek 5,” set to hit cinemas in December 2026!
The short video emphasizes Shrek’s continued popularity as a viral internet sensation, showcasing a fresh artistic direction for the DreamWorks animated series and announcing that Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) will once again bring their cherished characters to life from earlier movies. Additionally, two other iconic Shrek figures, Pinocchio and Lord Farquaad’s Magic Mirror, make an appearance — and as expected, Smash Mouth’s “All Star” plays in the background.
In an unexpected announcement about the voice cast, it’s been revealed that Zendaya (known for her roles in ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Challengers’) has joined the team, though the specific role she will play remains unclear at this time. As we had speculated earlier, it seems that the sequel is set some years after Shrek and Fiona welcomed their triplets – Fergus, Farkle, and Felicia. In the trailer, Felicia appears to be a young woman, possibly around her teenage years.
The official Shrek Instagram account playfully mocked Zendaya’s affiliation with the $4 billion series, referencing a tweet she made in 2017: “I watch Shrek too much as an adult.” They posted a screenshot of her tweet alongside an image of Shrek’s swamp habitat and captioned it, “This has only gotten better with time.

Fans have been excitedly looking forward to a new Shrek film since the hint at a return to the realm of Far Far Away in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which was nearly three years ago. As director Joel Crawford shared with SYFY WIRE, “In truth, we inserted that idea optimistically when writing the story.” They cherish the Shrek universe and are ecstatic to be able to continue the tale of Puss in Boots. If the movie is well-received by audiences and they desire more of the Shrek world, then we can venture to Far Far Away. They don’t have a grand plan; they were more like Perrito, hoping for the best!
Co-director Januel Mercado expressed, “It seemed like, ‘Wouldn’t this be delightful?'” as they worked on the project. This is because we didn’t want to disregard the fact that Puss is part of an established world. Including it made audiences really enjoy it.
Last summer saw the confirmation of the fifth installment, originally scheduled for release in July 2026 but now moved to the 2026 holiday season. Moreover, a separate project focusing on the character of Donkey is also being developed.
What is Shrek 5 about?
At this point, DreamWorks Animation hasn’t shared any specific storylines for Shrek 5 as of now. However, considering the potential development of maturing original characters, the narrative might revolve around passing on the mantle to a fresh generation.
When does Shrek 5 open in theaters?
The fifth film in the series inspired by fairy tales is set to premiere on the big screen on December 25, 2026. According to Variety, this movie will be directed by a duo who have previously worked on Shrek: Conrad Vernon, co-director of Shrek 2 and voice actor for the Gingerbread Man, as well as Walt Dohrn, who was in charge of story development and voiced Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek Forever After.
