Zendaya’s Oscar-Worthy Performance in Challengers Deserves Your Attention

This month, I’m thrilled to see AMC Theatres giving a shout-out to some beloved movies, including “Challengers,” which stars Zendaya as a former tennis prodigy-turned-coach. In this film, her inspiring portrayal of the character who sparks competition in two tennis players was, in my opinion, deserving of an Oscar nomination. Unfortunately, it was overlooked at the Oscars, but I’m glad to see it getting a well-deserved re-release this month. I can’t wait to discuss Zendaya’s exceptional performance with others who appreciate great cinema!

Zendaya Portrays Her Character’s Complexity So Well

In the film “Challengers,” Zendaya’s character, Tashi, doesn’t explicitly reveal why she stirs up the love triangle. Instead, it seems like she views life as a grand tennis tournament where she aims to be the victor in every situation. Her flirtatious behavior might not necessarily indicate affection but rather a strategy to transform Art and Patrick, her tennis partners, into fierce rivals for a game that Tashi has conceived. Her curiosity about their complex past serves as a tool to fuel this competitive spirit.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but appreciate how Zendaya masterfully depicts Tashi’s complex character. While some might perceive her as manipulative and cunning in driving a wedge between Patrick and Art, there’s a tender side to her performance that we can’t ignore. For example, when Patrick chooses Tashi over Art for coaching, her quickened speech and raised voice betray a sense of fear and unease. After all, this shift in power disrupts the intricate game Tashi has been masterminding for Art to triumph over Patrick. It’s moments like these that Zendaya brilliantly showcases Tashi’s hidden insecurities when she’s no longer pulling the strings.

Her Physical Commitment to Tashi Can’t Go Ignored

In the role of a tennis prodigy, Zendaya, known for her role in Spider-Man, was utterly dedicated to mastering her movements authentically. Despite confessing her dislike for training during Challengers, she displayed no mercy on the court through every swing and footwork her character showcased. She invests all the passion and vigor she possesses into her gameplay. According to Elle, Zendaya dedicated three months to perfecting her tennis-swing realism, even though she never actually hit a real tennis ball during that time! Truly, such dedication deserves an Oscar.

Zendaya convincingly portrays Tashi as an exceptional tennis player, yet there’s a striking change in Tashi’s physical appearance when comparing the flashback scenes to the present. In the past, younger Tashi is graceful and sensual, demonstrated through her rhythmic dancing. As she matures, dealing with career setbacks and coaching her husband, we observe a more rigid and fatigued demeanor in Tashi, reflecting the hardships of her life.

Zendaya’s Range Is Felt With Her First Leading Role As An Adult

In the Spider-Man movies and Euphoria where she played M.J. and Rue respectively, Zendaya established herself by portraying intricate teenage characters. Unlike standing out in a large cast, Zendaya shines not just as the lead but also in her first significant adult role in Dune. Additionally, for the first time, she got to play a mother’s part, which she attributes to the influence of her own family on her maternal acting.

In the portrayal of Tashi, we witness her evolution from an 18-year-old character to a woman in her mid-30s – a stage older than the actress playing her. Through Zendaya’s acting, Tashi’s internal conflicts, aspirations, and hunger for control are revealed. The main character is not just a simple woman; she’s complex with ambition, vulnerability, and an edgy quality that makes her hard to predict, whether on or off the court.

As Tashi progresses from being an 18-year-old to a mid-30s character, this evolution takes place despite the actress herself being younger than the age of Tashi. Through Zendaya’s portrayal, we delve into Tashi’s emotional turmoil, personal aspirations, and her drive for control. The female lead is not flat; she’s multidimensional with ambition, vulnerability, and a sharp edge that makes her unpredictable on and off the court.

Zendaya Spoke Volumes When Words Weren’t Needed

One of the most valuable traits for an actress is the ability to convey emotions through her eyes, and Zendaya demonstrates this flawlessly as Tashi. Her keen eyes are evident during the flashback scenes where she absorbs information about Art and Patrick’s friendship, as well as the shrewd glance she uses to entice Art and Patrick towards a kiss. However, we can’t help but notice the sorrow Tashi communicates after her career-ending injury, as she sits by a tree, on the verge of tears yet mustering up strength to endure and accept her new reality.

In the climactic scene of Challengers, Zendaya delivers a particularly expressive performance. Her character remains composed and foreboding because she trusts her husband will triumph, having earlier advised Patrick to let him win. However, when Tashi realizes the game isn’t being fairly played, Zendaya subtly brings her character to life with a worried expression. Her face then flickers back and forth rapidly as if sensing an impending threat. The final “Come on!” from Zendaya wonderfully encapsulates her character’s complexity – a strategist who loses control yet still gets to witness an exhilarating game.

It’s disappointing that Zendaya wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for her performance in “Challengers.” However, since the romantic sports drama will be airing as part of AMC’s Black History Month programming and will re-air on February 14th, you’ll have a chance to witness Zendaya’s Oscar-worthy portrayal. In this movie, she brilliantly embodies her character through various emotional shifts, body language, and nuanced expressions. You can also stream “Challengers” on your Amazon Prime subscription.
