Zoë Kravitz Wanted More High Fidelity, But Blames Hulu

As a gamer who has seen his fair share of cinematic masterpieces, I can confidently say that Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut, “Blink Twice”, is a game-changer. This young talent has proven her mettle not just once, but twice with her work on the much-loved “High Fidelity“. It’s like she’s been playing in the big leagues since she was a kid, and now she’s showing us all up.

Despite Blink Twice not setting records at the box office, first-time director Zoë Kravitz deserves high praise. Critics who’ve watched the film applaud her as a “true talent” and acknowledge her “sharp vision,” echoing our own positive review of the movie. Although this isn’t Kravitz’s debut in directing, she has previously made contributions to Hulu’s now-defunct series High Fidelity. The cancellation of that show still hurts, as Kravitz has expressed her disappointment with Hulu’s decision to cancel it.

During our conversation with Zoë Kravitz about “Blink Twice,” I couldn’t help but share my enthusiasm for “High Fidelity.” When I mentioned a potential second season, she responded casually with:

I know, I know. Hulu, baby. Hulu.

Let me offer some additional insights: The series “High Fidelity” was an astounding accomplishment. Given its origins as Nick Hornby’s renowned novel and John Cusack’s memorable film, a television adaptation would have been met with skepticism by fans. Even John Cusack himself had his doubts, expressing concerns they might “mess it up.” Yet, Zoë Kravitz and the team managed to pull off this seemingly impossible task. The show has earned critical acclaim across various platforms, a testament to its quality. It’s puzzling why shows with dedicated audiences and high praise often get cancelled, but regardless, “High Fidelity” defied expectations.

It seems that the secret ingredient in this equation was passion for the project and an understanding of the source material, as Kravitz explained:

Additionally, both the movie and the book hold a special place in my heart, so I approached them with great attention to detail, as I’m equally passionate about Nick Hornby and his universe.

I’m curious if the significant success of “High Fidelity” may have contributed to the approval of “Blink Twice,” initially known as “Pussy Island,” at MGM. This is because Zoë Kravitz and her writing partner, E.T. Feigenbaum, had been trying to get their movie produced long before “High Fidelity” was even in development. However, by the time they received the greenlight, the Hulu series had already aired. It’s yet another example of how the film industry can be mysterious and how projects often find themselves stuck in development limbo.

Noteworthy is the fact that after Hulu canceled High Fidelity, Zoë Kravitz reacted gracefully and true to her personal style. She’s now moving forward to greater opportunities and larger movie screens!

1. I’d like to stress again that “Blink Twice” is definitely worth your time and hints at an impressive future for Kravitz as a director. Catch it in cinemas currently! Regarding my late friend, “High Fidelity“, you can relive the entire first season with a Hulu subscription.
