Zombie Wolverine Almost Looked Very Different In Deadpool & Wolverine, But Of Course, Ryan Reynolds Couldn't Help Himself

As a lifelong Marvel enthusiast who’s seen more superhero movies than I care to count, I can confidently say that the opening sequence of Deadpool and Wolverine has got to be one of the most unforgettable scenes ever created. The blend of humor, action, and nostalgia in that scene is a testament to Ryan Reynolds’ genius and Shawn Levy’s vision.

Leaving a screening of the blockbuster summer film “Deadpool and Wolverine” without humming “Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC would have been quite unusual, as this catchy pop tune was played during the opening credits. If you were among those who watched it, you’d recall the sequence it accompanied. Deadpool, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, acknowledged that a Deadpool and Wolverine movie wouldn’t be possible without dishonoring the ending of “Logan.” Consequently, they chose not to. Instead, Deadpool unearthed Wolverine’s corpse, utilizing his adamantium skeleton to eliminate a group of TVA agents. This was a gruesome yet magnificent spectacle.

Prior to the development of the initial scene featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, there were numerous intricate discussions among Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, and the visual effects team at Weta, focusing on how to portray the extent of Wolverine’s (played by Hugh Jackman) “death”. This point was addressed in a conversation with ScreenRant, as stated by Weta VFX Supervisor Dan Macarin. During these discussions, specific details about Deadpool’s mask and Wolverine’s mask were considered, along with the depiction of Logan’s corpse. Macarin shared insights on this topic with ScreenRant.

The dialogues exchanged with the skeleton character were somewhat intriguing, as if questioning, ‘Might viewers assume he’s coming back to life if we expose too much of his form? If he has skin, wouldn’t it heal? Is this how he revives in the movie? Will we witness a spark of life in his eyes or something else?’ Initially, following our brainstorming sessions that involved a rather off-putting zombie prop being unearthed, they decided on a more straightforward approach: ‘How about a silver skeleton made entirely of adamantium metal? It’s recognizable, audiences will understand it, and its deteriorated, rough state should suffice.’

It’s likely that they added more, given that… Wolverine’s indestructible skeleton is as iconic as Captain America’s shield or Iron Man’s gauntlets. However, the visual effects team found it necessary to make adjustments because the Zombie Wolverine required something extra. To be clear, this wasn’t just any corpse; it was Wolverine’s. Ryan Reynolds couldn’t resist and kept pushing for more, which eventually resulted in the grotesque image we witness in the opening scene of Deadpool and Wolverine. As Macarin explains:

While the game unfolded, spectators looked on, and I found myself musing aloud, ‘You know what would take this up a notch? Let’s give Wolverine a hilarious twist! I have an idea to liven things up – let’s make Jackman’s character’s demise even more amusing.’

The assessment is accurate. The bits of zombie’s skin in the initial scene added an extra layer of madness, especially when combined with NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” and Deadpool’s dance routine. Unfortunately, we can’t show you that specific sequence since Deadpool and Wolverine hasn’t been released on Disney+ yet. However, we have an equally exciting alternative for you to enjoy!

I’ll never witness something like that without the image of Deadpool dancing with Wolverine’s remains popping into my head, all thanks to Ryan Reynolds. If you’re craving some Marvel action, it looks like a trip to the cinema is on the cards, as there aren’t any other Marvel films scheduled for release this year. For those who can’t get enough of the MCU, the TV series “Agatha All Along” will premiere in September, but then we’ll have a wait until February when Anthony Mackie wields his new shield and battles against Red Hulk in “Captain America: Brave New World”. Here’s hoping there won’t be as many corpses in that one.
