Zurich Festival to Honor ‘Conclave’ Director Edward Berger

As a seasoned gamer of the silver screen, I can confidently say that Edward Berger is a cinematic maestro who effortlessly weaves tales that captivate audiences worldwide. His latest masterpiece, Conclave, has only reinforced my admiration for his storytelling prowess. The man knows how to direct a film!

This year, the Zurich Film Festival plans to bestow the esteemed Golden Eye A Tribute To… Award upon director Edward Berger, recognizing his extraordinary career in filmmaking.

This year, Berger’s film “Conclave” is generating buzz in award circles once again. His 2022 war epic “All Quiet on the Western Front“, which was nominated for 9 Oscars and took home 4, served as a prelude to this gripping drama set within the Vatican. In “Conclave”, Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, and John Lithgow star in a suspenseful tale that follows the tense process of selecting a new pope after the demise of the previous one.

According to Christian Jungen, the Zurich Film Festival’s artistic director, Edward Berger has crafted a remarkable piece with ‘Conclave’. Edward is a skilled artist who excels in the classical style, allowing his talented character actors like Ralph Fiennes to shine. His instructions are always tailored to serve the story, and he demonstrates versatility across various genres, consistently finding the perfect approach for each project.

Berger is set to be awarded the Golden Eye accolade in Zurich on October 6, during the grand opening of the movie, Conclave.

Originating from Germany, with an Austrian father and a Swiss mother, this individual, named Berger, gained significant attention through his 2014 film titled “Jack“. However, it was on television where he initially left an impact, captivating audiences with the popular series “Deutschland 83” and the 2018 production “Patrick Melrose“, which starred Benedict Cumberbatch.

Following the triumph of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” Berger established a production company, Nine Hours, in collaboration with Luke Rivett (known for “Corner Office” and “Berlin Station”) and Jeanne Tremsal (renowned for “So Long Daddy” and “See you in Hell”). This new venture secured a first-look deal with the prominent production company, Fremantle.

The Zurich A Tribute to… Honor acknowledges film directors who have left a significant mark on cinema history with their creations. Notable recipients of this award include Wim Wenders, Todd Haynes, Michael Haneke, Paolo Sorrentino, and Luca Guadagnino.

The 20th Zurich Film Festival runs Oct. 3-13.
