12-year-olds, shotguns, and threats: Pump.fun’s livestream misuse leaves the community stunned

As a seasoned observer of the ever-evolving crypto landscape, I find myself both intrigued and concerned by the trajectory of Pump.fun. Having navigated through several market cycles since the early days of Bitcoin, I’ve come to appreciate the power of innovation and decentralization. However, the recent turn of events at Pump.fun has left me questioning whether we’ve pushed the boundaries too far.

Is it possible for a platform that allows users to create tokens without moderation to manage the potential ethical issues arising from unchecked content, as demonstrated by the controversial incident involving Pump.fun’s live streaming feature?

Live streams gone lethal

The platform Pump.fun, which allows for the creation of tokens on the Solana network, has suddenly become the center of an escalating cryptocurrency debate.

At first, Pump.fun was recognized as a platform that empowers creators. What sets it apart is that it enables users to issue their own tokens with zero fees involved. Additionally, it fosters community interaction by offering diverse features, which has made it a favorite amongst the cryptocurrency community.

Lately, the platform has rolled out a live streaming function, which appears to be designed for enhancing user engagement and offering content creators a more immediate means of communicating with their followers.

Initially, it seemed like a valuable enhancement, but it’s since morphed into an unsettling misapplication of this tool, causing shock within the cryptocurrency community.

Instead of using the livestream function to share tokens or encourage meaningful conversations, some users have unfortunately misused it, transforming it into a venue for disturbing displays of shock and dismay.

The seriousness of the case became apparent when Beau, a safety manager at Pudgy Penguins, disclosed one of the most troubling occurrences.

As an analyst, I’m reaching out to express my concern about a distressing situation. It appears that someone is using your livestreams to express suicidal threats based on the marketcap of a coin. This behavior is deeply troubling and requires immediate attention.

On Pump.fun’s live broadcast, a user reportedly made a troubling promise: they would take their own life if their token didn’t meet a certain market capitalization. The matter became more serious when Beau disclosed that the person later posted a video suggesting they had followed through on this threat.

When tokens become tools of terror

The charm of Pump.fun’s livestream function stems from its ease: anyone can broadcast their token experience to a worldwide audience instantaneously. Yet, this unrestricted accessibility has unfortunately given rise to a wave of misuse, exposing a troubling aspect of human actions.

It was intended to foster community interaction, but unfortunately, it’s evolved into a platform where unspeakable atrocities are displayed. The content shown recently has surpassed all limits of shock, causing not just discomfort, but profound trauma for the viewers.

In one particularly horrifying incident, a token creator threatened to perform “unthinkable acts” if their cryptocurrency reached a $25 million market cap.

Here’s an amusing analogy about a developer: A pumped-up “dev” is consuming his own mistakes.

The live broadcast, showcasing disturbing images of a person, quickly spread through the site and social networks, causing a massive wave of public anger.

However, this was only a glimpse into a much larger issue. A chilling trend has surfaced where each incident seems to grow more disturbing. In one instance, a young boy, scarcely 12 years old, pointed a shotgun at his own family and threatened to use it unless the value of his virtual token reached a specific level.

Lives are being lost in the pump market.

In a different scenario, a pair of individuals were frequently observed striking their young child, stating they would cease only when their token accrued a specific worth.

Even animals are unfortunately part of this bleak showdown. A distressing online broadcast depicted a man threatening to fire a weapon at his pet dog, insisting he’d do so unless the worth of his digital token escalated to an astounding $11 million.

He said he’ll shoot his dog if his meme coin doesn’t hit an $11M market cap 😭

On this platform, inappropriate usage goes beyond violent actions. Disturbing streams with graphic content, such as material involving minors and animals, have emerged, adding to the sense that security and trustworthiness are disappearing. It seems they’re exploiting shock value for promotional purposes.

At the time of writing, Pump.fun removed the livestream section from its website.

Promises, defenses, and a furious crypto community

This week, the opposition towards Pump.fun hit unprecedented levels, causing its mysterious creator, identified merely as “Alon,” to release a public announcement concerning matter X.

On our live streaming platform, a wave of genuine concerns has emerged about the type of content permitted. To clarify, we proactively monitor and remove any inappropriate or illegal content from our site. This encompasses…

— alon (@a1lon9) November 22, 2024

Alon tried to explain the increasing issues with the misappropriation of Pump.fun’s live stream function. However, instead of providing clarity and comfort, his statement infuriated the online community.

To start off, Alon acknowledged the valid worries within the community regarding the broadcasting of harmful content. He emphasized that the platform consistently works to filter out prohibited content, encompassing photos, videos, live streams, and comments.

However, this claim seemed unrelated to the distressing events persistently occurring on the platform. Alon emphasized Pump.fun’s dedication to upholding free speech, underscoring the need to reconcile unrestricted expression with the obligation to filter out harmful or offensive material.

He even drew parallels to platforms like X and Reddit, which allow pornographic material but tag it as NSFW (Not Safe For Work). Users, he argued, could opt out of such content by toggling a filter.

Despite this approach not tackling the heart of the matter directly, it’s crucial to understand that the issue extends beyond just labeling adult or explicit content. The real challenge lies in the platform’s lack of capability to prevent potentially hazardous and inappropriate live streams from being aired initially.

It seems that even though Alon pointed out a “big group of moderators” who work continuously, it appears there’s an important void in supervision given the persistence of these streams.

The immediate reaction from the people has been severe and unforgiving. A recurring point in the criticism is the perception that Pump.fun’s management isn’t taking sufficient steps to prevent the negative impact. One user expressed, “The things being tolerated on your platform are appalling.

It’s disappointing to see the inappropriate content tolerated on your platform. I strongly recommend enhancing your moderation efforts to prevent further harm, distress, and potential negative perceptions of cryptocurrency.

— princesspeach (@Elli_tweets_) November 25, 2024

A different user claimed that the platform is involved in causing damage by “persisting to provide the data transmission” for such material.

It’s concerning that individuals are intentionally causing harm through live streams, and you’re unintentionally supporting this action by providing the necessary bandwidth. Perhaps it would be best to discontinue this feature for now.

— Whytepaper (@Whytepaper) November 25, 2024

To numerous users, the moderation assurances and claims made by Alon seem unconvincing. A disgruntled user even cautioned that if the platform fails to act promptly, it may draw unwanted attention from regulators, which could impact the entire cryptocurrency sector.

On this platform, we’re against implementing stringent regulations on cryptocurrency exchanges that many find unnecessary, potentially causing widespread disruption. Stop broadcasting your live streams now, @pumpdotfun! (Paraphrased for clarity and readability)

— nobody ur not yo (@ipxppxrcs) November 25, 2024

The individual made a veiled reference to the detention of the Telegram founder this year, darkly implying, “May they apprehend you as well.

I sincerely hope that, just as the founder of TG was apprehended, the condition of your trench system and the substandard infrastructure you’ve constructed will lead to similar legal consequences for you.

— LevendiPro (@LevendiPro) November 25, 2024

As long as significant improvements aren’t noticeable, there’s a danger that the platform could lose users and potentially its relevance within the cryptocurrency market. This raises questions among some about whether unbounded decentralization may be an unnecessary risk.

Where does Pump.fun stand now?

In the midst of heated debate, Pump.fun is now facing a pivotal moment in its history. This platform, previously celebrated for its simplicity in creating tokens on Solana, is currently under intense examination. Data obtained from Dune Analytics paints a clear picture of its present situation.

By November 25th, I’ve observed that Pump.fun, a relatively young platform, is poised to reach a cumulative revenue of approximately $250 million. This impressive figure is particularly noteworthy considering the platform didn’t gain substantial popularity until April and May of 2024.

Yet, the dispute that flared up on November 23rd not only ignited a significant financial success but also precipitated a swift downfall. On this particular day when public disapproval flooded social media platforms, Pump.fun experienced its largest single-day income of $14.4 million.

Consequentially, the impact was swift and severe. By November 24, revenue nose-dived to $3.75 million – a plunge of approximately 74% in a single day. This fall, though higher than the platform’s usual daily benchmark, indicates that the negative response is already manifesting in real terms.

It’s clear that there’s a lot of excitement surrounding new token launches, as more than 50,000 tokens were created just within the last day. This has brought the total number of tokens launched on the platform so far close to 4 million.

For many creators, the ease of minting a token remains a powerful draw, seemingly unaffected by the ethical questions now looming over Pump.fun.

Yet, this growth comes at a cost. The platform’s unmoderated content and its growing reputation as a haven for extreme behavior could soon place it squarely in the regulatory crosshairs.

If Donald Trump is expected to resume his position in the White House by January 2025, his supportive view on cryptocurrencies could potentially bring significant shifts within the sector.

During Trump’s presidency, there may be a push for wider use of cryptocurrencies; however, sites such as Pump.fun, which operate within the decentralized and mostly unsupervised realms, might face increased examination.

It’s crucial to observe whether Pump.fun can adjust to these difficulties or ends up being overwhelmed by its triumphs, as this could mark a pivotal point – not only for the specific platform, but also for the larger decentralized community it symbolizes.
