Mike Schmidt, a co-founder of Bitcoin non-profit Brink, announced that the FBI in the United States had demanded the private details of individuals who attended a 2022 gathering of Bitcoin core developers through a subpoena.
According to reports, an FBI subpoena has been issued allegedly relating to a hack resulting in the loss of 216 Bitcoins from Luke Dashjr, a well-known Bitcoin developer.
In the course of looking into Luke Dashjr’s alleged theft of his bitcoins, I received a subpoena from the FBI requesting details about individuals who attended the CoreDev Atlanta event in October 2022, close to TABConf 2022. My lawyer advised me to comply with the subpoena.
Furthermore, Schmidt admitted sending the email and revealed to the recipients that he had provided the FBI with their email addresses, GitHub usernames, and full names. He mentioned that the FBI had initially requested him to keep the subpoena hidden for a year, but this confidentiality period had now expired when he disclosed this information.
Schmidt stated, “I don’t have any specifics regarding the probe or if the subpoena was issued for a particular suspect or just to collect info for the ongoing investigation.”
The founder of Brink shared that there’s been no communication between him and the FBI since then, yet he remained silent about the details.
On December 31, 2022, Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr announced that over 200 Bitcoins, worth around $3.3 million at the time, had been stolen from him due to a breach in his Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) key security. However, with current market values, this amount of Bitcoin is now worth over $14 million.
