Meta Eliminates AI-Driven Influence Accounts in China, Israel

The ability to create disinformation through artificial intelligence is a dangerous trend that could potentially disrupt the integrity of social media platforms and sway public opinion.


Meta Platforms Inc. recently removed over 500 Facebook accounts originating from various countries including China, Israel, Iran, and Russia, which were discovered to be involved in clandestine manipulation efforts. These campaigns utilized advanced artificial intelligence technologies to disseminate false information, according to the company’s latest quarterly security update.

Malicious users have employed advanced techniques involving artificial intelligence (AI) to produce deceptive messages, visuals, and clips on Meta Platforms Inc. (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp), with the aim of diverting users from authentic material.

In analyzing Meta’s recent study published on Wednesday, I found that despite deploying generative AI within their networks, the company maintains its ability to disrupt existing structures remains unaltered from my perspective.

As a crypto investor and tech-savvy individual, I keep a close eye on Meta Platforms’ announcements regarding security and integrity of their social media platforms. Recently, they disclosed the identification and subsequent removal of two separate disinformation campaigns. One of these networks originated from China and utilized artificial intelligence (AI) to produce fake images depicting a non-existent pro-Sikh movement. The other network hailed from Israel and employed AI to generate comments expressing undue praise for Israel’s military. Fortunately, both campaigns were taken down before they could gain significant traction.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Meta’s policy chief for threat mitigation, David Agranovich, shared his perspective, expressing that currently, generative AI is not being employed in significantly complex manners. The use of AI for creating profile pictures or generating massive amounts of spam has yet to yield effective results.

Yet, Agranovich cautioned, “These networks are known to be adversarial in nature. We anticipate they will continue to adapt their strategies as their technology advances.”

As a researcher focusing on global affairs at Meta, I recognize the urgent need to categorize and distinguish AI-generated content from authentic user-created material. With the approaching 2024 election season, this becomes even more critical as over thirty nations prepare for international elections. Notable among these are the United States, India, and Brazil, all of which rely heavily on our company’s apps. Ensuring transparency and trust in the digital space is essential to maintain the integrity of democratic processes worldwide.

As an analyst, I’ve noticed a shift in Meta’s photo tagging practices where they are now using both visible and invisible tags. In terms of content regulation, Meta is no longer deleting deceptive AI-generated material but rather identifying it instead. On Facebook and Instagram, advertisers are mandated to disclose the use of artificial intelligence for social issues, elections, or political ads. However, political advertisements from political figures remain exempt from fact-checking by the company.
