As a seasoned crypto investor with a deep appreciation for the values of freedom and expression that underpin the digital revolution, I am deeply troubled by the detention of Pavel Durov. His arrest at Le Bourget Airport in Paris smacks of an assault on basic human rights and a violation of the very principles of free speech that Europe is supposed to uphold.
The TON Society, which represents the TON community, has published an open appeal requesting the prompt liberation of Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov, who was detained on August 24 at Le Bourget Airport in Paris.
In the letter, TON Society described Durov’s detention as a “direct assault on a basic human right” and criticized it as a violation of free speech principles.
The team contended that the French government’s actions contradict the European ideals of liberty and open communication that we uphold.
The TON Society has appealed to global entities such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the European Union, requesting them to intervene and encourage France to uphold human rights.
Additionally, the letter highlighted a decision made by the European Court of Human Rights, emphasizing that encryption tools, similar to those employed by Telegram, play a crucial role in safeguarding the right to free expression.
1) In addition, The Society urged other tech firms and social networks to resist government-ordered censorship and uphold their users’ freedoms. The correspondence highlighted that Telegram’s content moderation guidelines align with the European Union’s Digital Services Act, thus showing commitment to regulatory norms.
Regardless of mounting demands for his release, French officials have opted to continue holding Durov in detention until August 28th as part of an ongoing probe concerning accusations that a Telegram user participated in unlawful activities. This choice has sparked criticism from those who perceive the French government as overreaching its authority.
Despite the French President Emmanuel Macron stating that Nikolai Durov’s arrest isn’t politically driven, it hasn’t alleviated the public’s apprehensions.
