Breaking: WazirX Hacker moves another Rs 100 crore for money laundering

As a seasoned analyst with years of experience under my belt, I find myself increasingly alarmed by the audacity and sophistication of this WazirX hacker. The continuous laundering of stolen funds through Tornado Cash Mixer is a clear indication that we are dealing with a highly skilled individual who is determined to evade authorities.

It’s reported that the individual suspected of orchestrating the WazirX exchange hack has transferred another 5001 Ether (ETH) to a new wallet on September 9th, with the intention of cleaning the stolen funds via Tornado Cash Mixer. As soon as this batch was moved, the hacker initiated the laundering process by breaking it down into smaller portions and washing it through Tornado Cash over time.

So far, the WazirX hacker has cleaned up approximately 7600 Ether (ETH), equivalent to around Rs 147 crores, using Tornado Cash between September 2 and September 7. This money laundering activity was conducted in numerous separate transactions, each worth 100 Ether.

On a Monday afternoon, it’s said that a large amount of ETH (5001 in total, equivalent to approximately Rs 96.86 crores) was transferred from one address to another. Following this transfer, the suspected hacker began laundering the stolen ETH by sending it through Tornado in multiple small transactions. As of now, there have been four separate instances where the alleged WazirX hacker has sent 100 ETH each to Tornado using this method.

On July 18, it is reported that the multi-signature wallet of WazirX exchange was targeted by suspected hackers who made off with various cryptocurrencies valued at an astounding $234 Million (equivalent to approximately Rs 2000 crore). The misappropriated funds were transferred to multiple different addresses.

50 or more days have passed since the hack occurred, and the WazirX exchange has stopped all withdrawals from their platform. They’ve taken this step and filed for a moratorium in the Singapore High Court. This move by the hackers follows continuous demands from WazirX users for a criminal investigation against the management of the exchange due to ongoing protests.
