As a researcher who has spent years delving into the complex world of cybersecurity and cryptocurrencies, this recent hack of the Supreme Court of India’s official YouTube channel is both alarming and disheartening. The audacity of these hackers to exploit such a high-profile platform for their nefarious schemes serves as a stark reminder that no institution is immune to the threats lurking in the digital realm.
Unauthorized individuals gained control over the Supreme Court of India’s official YouTube account, using it to publicize a questionable cryptocurrency venture centered around Ripple‘s XRP digital token.
On September 20th, control of the channel was seized and it was swiftly renamed for the purpose of broadcasting a deceptive video starring Ripple (XRP)’s CEO, Brad Garlinghouse. This video falsely urged viewers to invest in a fraudulent scheme, as reported by The India Times.
The cybercriminals altered the stream’s title and erased all past content to give the appearance of a genuine scheme. Additionally, they embedded fraudulent links for phishing within the live broadcast, encouraging viewers to link their digital wallets with cryptocurrency, as evidenced by the provided screenshots.

After establishing a connection, hackers might seize control over the digital wallets and pilfer funds, all without requiring additional approval from the account holder. In one of the videos on YouTube, an icon indicated, “Ripple is expected to reach $2 this month.
YouTube swiftly acted by deleting the channel, stating it had breached their community rules. It’s important to note that this isn’t a new tactic; hackers frequently leverage well-known platforms such as YouTube to disseminate fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes.
As a researcher examining digital security matters, I find the unauthorized intrusion into India’s Supreme Court’s YouTube account, which was streaming live hearings of significant cases, particularly alarming given the high profile and esteem in which the court is held.
Crypto scams
Deceitful cryptocurrency schemes, often involving false investment proposals, frequently exploit individuals’ lack of knowledge about digital assets such as XRP, a currency developed by Ripple Labs for swift cross-border transactions. Cybercriminals often target prominent platforms to lend legitimacy to their fraudulent activities.
In the month of July 2023, Attorney Jeremy Hogan’s Twitter account was illegally accessed and manipulated to advertise fraudulent XRP giveaways associated with the Ripple vs SEC legal case. Legal professionals Jesse Hynes and James Filan alerted the public about the compromised account and urged vigilance.
Currently, the Supreme Court’s online platform is not accessible, which underscores increasing apprehensions about internet security, especially since more public entities are adopting digital channels for public interaction.
