Changpeng Zhao is walking free. What will he do next?

As a researcher with a keen interest in the dynamic world of cryptocurrency, I have closely followed the intriguing journey of Changpeng Zhao (CZ). His recent four-month stint behind bars for violating the Bank Secrecy Act was certainly an unexpected twist in his otherwise meteoric rise.

It’s permanent; he’s prohibited from managing Binance for the remainder of his life. He intends to devote himself to teaching kids and philanthropic activities instead. However, one might wonder if Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has permanently stepped away from the cryptocurrency world.

Changpeng Zhao was the world’s richest inmate, with Forbes estimating his net worth at $61.6 billion.

Previously incarcerated for four months due to Binance’s failure to implement proper customer identification measures, which breached the Bank Secrecy Act, he was released from a low-security California prison and regained his freedom on September 27.

The original plan for the launch of CZ was set for September 29, however, due to it falling on a Sunday, there was an option granted to the wardens to release him ahead on a Friday instead.

Changpeng Zhao is walking free. What will he do next?

Regardless of the brief span of the statement, life is set to undergo a significant shift for the billionaire. Previously, he held an almost mythical standing as he led Binance, yet recently, he was given a permanent prohibition from overseeing the exchange.

These events have sparked much debate about what actions CZ might take next. Is it possible that he could re-enter the crypto world, the realm that amassed his immense wealth? Or is there a shift towards Artificial Intelligence on the horizon? However, during his sentencing hearing in April, the 47-year-old indicated that neither possibility was at the forefront of his current plans, stating emphatically: “Neither option is my immediate focus.

Moving forward in my journey, I am determined to create chances for younger generations. I’m constructing a resourceful platform aimed at offering superior education to disadvantaged children globally, without any cost involved.

For this purpose, a site named Giggle Academy has been developed, however, it appears that it’s still in the early stages before its official launch.

In their statement, Binance expresses good wishes for CZ and clarifies that there’s no lingering animosity, as Richard Teng has taken over as the new CEO.

We’re thrilled that CZ (Changpeng Zhao) will be reunited with his loved ones. Though he won’t be overseeing or running Binance anymore, we can’t wait to find out where his talents lead him next!

It’s almost certain that the entrepreneur can’t wait to share with his 8.8 million followers about X, as he had been quite active there prior to his imprisonment.

CZ’s future

Advocates argue that the penalty imposed on CZ seems more like a light reprimand, as Better Markets had argued there was an abundance of evidence pointing towards CZ deliberately creating and operating Binance as a massive cryptocurrency laundromat for some of the world’s most notorious criminals.

His four-month stint in jail was well short of the 18-month maximum set out in sentencing guidelines — and miles away from the three years that U.S. prosecutors had sought. One former Binance employee, who did not wish to be named, told crypto.news:

The sentence appears rather brief given the severity of the charges against him, which seems to be another instance of financial criminals escaping lengthy prosecution.

They contended that, considering their familiarity with CZ’s character, four months was far too short a time for the disgraced businessman to absorb lessons from his wrongdoings.

“I’d imagine he sees this as a small but unfortunate blip in his path towards building his empire.”

An individual who previously worked at Binance shared their doubt about whether Changpeng Zhao (CZ) might re-enter the cryptocurrency sector, yet emphasized that several of CZ’s top deputies are currently leading the exchange instead.

“Even if he is never actually ‘working’ in crypto again, the fact that He Yi is still at Binance means that CZ will never be far from crypto.”

He Yi is Binance’s co-founder and chief customer service officer, who has been CZ’s partner since 2014.

However, a more significant point for consideration arises: To what extent has Changpeng Zhao’s actions affected Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange? In recent times, this platform has been prohibited in major global economies like the U.K. and U.S. When questioned about whether his imprisonment would have long-term consequences for the platform, our source provided insight:

I’m not convinced by that argument. It appears that people tend to forget about the alleged misdeeds of CZ and Binance, in favor of focusing on SBF and FTX.

It’s quite clear that right now, CZ (Changpeng Zhao) is focusing on restoring his reputation. However, both he and Binance can expect ongoing legal hurdles in the near future.

As an analyst, just a few short years back, I would’ve brushed off any mentions of potential challenges with a casual “4” – a term I often employed to denote “FUD,” or fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

No longer a part of the empire he helped build, Changpeng Zhao may not cut a more humble figure.
