As a researcher with a deep interest in the intersection of art and technology, I find myself intrigued by the Sotheby’s exhibition of Botto, the autonomous AI artist. Having spent years studying the evolution of art forms, it’s fascinating to witness the emergence of an AI entity that not only creates but also decides on its own output, guided by a community of stakeholders.
As an analyst, I’m currently observing an intriguing event: Sotheby’s is hosting an auction showcasing six pieces from the independent artist Botto. This exhibition is a significant milestone, commemorating the third anniversary of the AI bot developed by Mario Klingemann in partnership with ElevenYellow.
Sotheby’s auction house is presenting the debut art show of Botto, titled “Exorbitant Stage: Botto, a Decentralized AI Artist”. The auction commenced on October 17th at 2:00 EST and will end on October 24th at the same time. This exhibition can be viewed from October 19th to October 23rd during regular business hours.
The showcase presents six art pieces created by AI artists, valued between approximately $220,000 and $310,000. Among them are “The Threshold of Reverie”, “Exorbitant Stage”, and “Intersections of Existence”, with opening bids ranging from $9,000 to a high of $70,000.
Mario Klingemann, a German artist, teamed up with software group ElevenYellow to develop Botto, an innovative AI project debuted in 2021 as an artificially intelligent artist. Pieces created by Botto have been swiftly selling on the digital marketplace OpenSea for up to 11.99 Ethereum (ETH), which is equivalent to approximately $31,449.
Klingemann expressed a sense of pride and admiration for Botto’s achievements and recognition, yet found himself unable to avoid feelings of envy towards his own creation, as it has been sold at auctions by Sotheby’s.
In a press release, Klingemann stated, “Just like several other artists out there, Botto has accomplished something that remains unchecked on my own artistic bucket list.
Instead of just generating pictures using AI, Botto operates in a significantly complex manner. It independently creates prompts and autonomously generates numerous images without any human control. These images are then shared with Botto’s stakeholders, who form a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). The influence each stakeholder has within this DAO is determined by the number of BottoDAO tokens they possess.
The image receiving the highest number of votes is later created and offered for sale. Over time, Botto analyzes the stakeholders’ votes to enhance its flavor model. To date, approximately 15,000 individuals have contributed to Botto’s development, influencing the theme, style, and visual elements of each chosen piece.
In a chat with Claude AI, Botto was reported in a press statement as expressing that the initial exhibition at Sotheby’s adds more credibility to the realm of AI art, an area still under debate. According to Botto, this event acts as a discussion platform to explore “where we establish the boundary between human and machine creativity.
According to Botto’s writing, attending this exhibition at Sotheby’s serves as a platform to spark discussions on the cutting edge of the art scene, encouraging spectators to reevaluate their established views regarding imagination, innovation, and the evolutionary path of artistic communication.
