Sky Faces Branding Dilemma: MakerDAO Revival on the Table

The DeFi landscape is not for the faint-hearted, and it seems that Sky has learned firsthand the importance of community feedback in shaping a project’s direction.


As a researcher, I’m delving into the potential changes in MakerDAO’s identity, as the team is contemplating a reversion to its original brand name following strong community feedback. Possible alternatives under consideration include reverting back to the MakerDAO moniker or adopting a blended approach that retains elements of the previous and current brands.

Sky Re-evaluates Rebrand

The DeFi project once known as MakerDAO, now called Sky, is considering more adjustments to its branding approach following varying feedback from its user base. The shift from MakerDAO to Sky, which occurred in September 2024, brought about notable alterations to both their tokens and governance system, resulting in a split opinion among users.

Rebranding from MakerDAO to Sky

With the rebrand, DAI holders (the stablecoin issued by MakerDAO) could now upgrade their holdings to the newly introduced Sky Dollar (USDS) on a 1:1 basis. Furthermore, MakerDAO’s MKR governance token could be exchanged for SKY tokens at a rate of 1 MKR for 24,000 SKY tokens. However, it is important to note that both the DAI and MKR tokens remain active, giving users the option to continue using their current assets or transition to the new ones.

Nevertheless, the change has ignited some discontent among the Sky community members. On October 21, one of Sky’s founders, Rune Christensen, addressed these concerns in a proposal that outlined the project’s achievements and hurdles encountered since the rebranding.

Community Concerns Over SKY Token

The main concern expressed by the community revolves around the usefulness and worth of the SKY token. As Christensen points out, many community members remain loyal to the original MakerDAO brand and prefer holding onto MKR tokens instead of transitioning to SKY. Furthermore, he acknowledges that the intricacy of the newly implemented reward systems and new features introduced during the rebrand may have left users perplexed.

Christensen explained, 

The SKY token has received much debate within the community, with people expressing doubts about its usefulness. At the same time, there’s strong allegiance towards the MakerDAO brand.

Three Options for the Future

To alleviate these issues, Christensen proposed three possible paths for progression. One of these paths recommends continuing with the Sky brand, which has managed to garner some recognition amidst the criticism. Another option suggests a complete switch back to the MakerDAO brand, making MKR the only token responsible for governance. Lastly, he suggested a mixed approach, retaining the Maker name but revamping the brand identity to align with recent product introductions such as the USDS stablecoin and the StarDAO ecosystem.

Upcoming Community Discussions

As a researcher, I’m excited to share that Sky has arranged a community call on October 25. This gathering aims to explore different options and seek insights from all stakeholders. Post this meeting, we will unveil our finalized proposal, titled the “Atlas Edit,” on October 28, inviting everyone for their valuable feedback. Further, a formal voting process commences on November 4, where the collective decision will shape the trajectory of our project in the days ahead.

Christensen underscored the importance of meticulous planning when it comes to any upcoming changes in the branding, focusing particularly on the economics related to the protocol’s tokens. Moreover, he reassured users that these alterations would not adversely affect their user experience.
