The X account of rapper Wiz Khalifa was hacked yesterday. The hackers used his account to promote a fake cryptocurrency called “$WIZ” to his 35.7 million followers.
Initially, this counterfeit coin generated significant interest upon release, skyrocketing to a worth of $3.4 million almost instantly. However, within just an hour, its value plummeted to nearly $28,000 as investors began offloading their tokens.
As a researcher delving into the world of cryptocurrencies, I came across a troubling piece of information posted by hackers claiming that Khalifa was collaborating with them to distribute $WIZ for crypto enthusiasts. This deceptive statement sparked widespread concern within our community.
Following the hack on Khalifa’s account, it was discovered that two primary digital wallets had purchased approximately 155 million WIZ tokens at a cost of $19,100 each. Subsequently, these wallets managed to sell the same tokens for a significant profit of around $160,000.
As a crypto investor, I’m keeping a close eye on the ongoing situation regarding Khalifa’s account. While the specific method used for the hack isn’t confirmed yet, there’s a possibility it could be related to SIM swapping. This is a technique where unscrupulous individuals seize control of someone’s phone number, enabling them to reset passwords and ultimately gain access to accounts. I’m being extra vigilant with my own security measures to avoid falling victim to such tactics.
Regarding Ayrey’s situation, the hackers employed the identical tactic to boost the value of a digital currency known as Infinite Backrooms (IB). The value skyrocketed to an impressive $25 million, but they swiftly disposed of their tokens after that.
As of now, I’m yet to ascertain whether Khalifa has reclaimed access to his account, but the suspicious posts about the questionable cryptocurrency have vanished.
