As a seasoned researcher with a penchant for uncovering truths and understanding societal trends, this latest incident of crypto theft has left me more than a little concerned. The story of Viacheslav Leibov being robbed in Thailand, just days before Devcon, is a stark reminder that the world of cryptocurrencies is not immune to real-world threats.
On Monday, November 11th, I unfortunately fell victim to a group of thieves in Thailand, the location for an upcoming Devcon event. They managed to swipe approximately $250,000 from my crypto wallet, originating from Ukraine. A grim reminder of the risks associated with digital assets and the importance of security measures when investing in cryptocurrencies.
Viacheslav Leibov, a citizen of Ukraine, had his possessions valued at around a quarter million dollars in Tether (USDT) stolen from him during a trip to Thailand. According to local news outlets, this crypto user was bound with cables and coerced into transferring the stablecoins to the thief’s account.
The thieves warned Leibov against contacting the police before departing, having left him in a hotel room in Phuket. Subsequently, Leibov managed to escape and reported the occurrence to local officials, disclosing at least two potential suspects to the authorities.
Reports of cryptocurrency heists are surfacing globally, as malicious individuals and criminals are using violent tactics to seize crypto users’ assets. Recently, the CEO of WonderFi, Dean Skurka, was abducted in downtown Toronto and was freed only after settling a $1 million ransom demand in digital currencies.
Malaysian police investigated four suspects connected to a $1.2 million crypto kidnapping in August. Hong Kong authorities arrested two kidnappers over a $660,000 USDT ransom, crypto.news reported in July.
With an uptick in real-world cryptocurrency heists occurring more frequently in areas that are friendly towards crypto, the digital currency community is growing more vigilant. Attendees at conferences have been urged to travel in groups for safety reasons, as this can help protect them from potential threats on their person.
Leibov’s incident sparked these directives anew for crypto enthusiasts heading to Bangkok for Devcon – one of the biggest annual Ethereum (ETH) conferences. Notably, Phuket, where the incident occurred, is just a two-hour flight from Thailand’s capital city.
