As an analyst with over a decade of experience in the crypto industry, I find Stuart Hoegner’s departure from Tether and Bitfinex to be a significant shift in the landscape of these influential firms. Having closely followed Hoegner’s career since his joining Bitfinex in 2014, it is clear that his deep understanding and strategic guidance have played a pivotal role in shaping their growth and navigation through complex legal and regulatory waters.
The timing of his departure coincides with other executive changes within these organizations, suggesting a period of transition. The appointment of Michael Hilliard as the new general counsel is a wise choice, given his extensive experience co-leading the legal efforts alongside Hoegner.
However, I must admit, it’s always a bit unsettling when the ‘go-to’ guy in any organization decides to hang up his boots (or should I say crypto keys?). But fear not, for it seems that Hilliard is more than capable of carrying on Hoegner’s legacy.
On a lighter note, I can’t help but wonder if Hoegner has finally decided to take that long-awaited vacation to the Metaverse, where he can explore the endless possibilities of blockchain without the hassle of regulatory scrutiny!
Stuart Hoegner, previously legal advisor for both Tether and Bitfinex, has decided to end his tenure with these cryptocurrency companies.
This change in his profile on X, where he’s now listed as “Former General Counsel at Bitfinex and Tether,” suggests that his ten-year affiliation with these companies, which started when he joined Bitfinex in 2014, as mentioned on his LinkedIn, has concluded.
Hoegner’s leaving signifies a significant phase of transformation for these related companies. Evidence from Tether’s “About Us” page, which has been preserved, shows that Hoegner was still indicated as the general counsel as recent as December 24th.
Instead, the current page only highlights essential figures like CEO Paolo Ardoino, CFO Giancarlo Devasini, COO Claudia Lagorio. Previously, Bitfinex’s records indicated that Hoegner was included up until November, but he is no longer mentioned now.
This adjustment occurs alongside other leadership shifts occurring within these entities. Notably, Tether and Bitfinex have separated from their Chief Compliance Officers, Leonardo Real in the case of Tether, and Peter Warrack for Bitfinex. These changes are indicated by updates on their respective “About Us” sections.
In response to queries about who’s leading the legal team at present, Tether and Bitfinex have confirmed to Protos that they have appointed Michael Hilliard as their new top lawyer (general counsel).
For many years, Hilliard has been an essential partner to Hoegner in spearheading the legal initiatives for both companies. With a comprehensive grasp of their operational aspects and a tactical mindset, he skillfully guides through the intricate legal and regulatory maze that governs cryptocurrency. It’s worth noting that Hoegner has announced his decision to retire.
