A young adult, aged 24, studying law from the Netherlands, was apprehended under the suspicion of swindling approximately 300 investors by employing a flawed cryptocurrency trading operation.
Law enforcement officers arrested a suspect in Hengelo, Netherlands, after a prolonged probe into claims of fraud and misappropriation of funds, potentially totaling €1.5 million to €4.5 million (approximately $1.6 million to $4.6 million), linked to the missing money.
A previously acclaimed trader, known only by name, is said to have persuaded relatives, acquaintances, and local soccer players to put their money into his trading business, as reported by regional news source RTV Oost.
It’s said that he earned half of all profits as his fee for each trade. At first, these trades showed profits, but unfortunately, accumulating losses eventually led to the downfall of the entire venture.
Approximately a year back, events took a turn for the worse as the trader disclosed to his clients, through an email sent by his brother, that all their investments were lost, as reported by RTV Oost.
The fraudster went into hiding
Following the aftermath, the trader chose to conceal himself due to persistent threats from those affected. Later, he was moved to a secure location that was arranged in conjunction with law enforcement officials.
In my role as an analyst, I must share that even though he vanished, those affected joined forces to establish a foundation dedicated to probing the matter of the misplaced funds. Their relentless work culminated in his apprehension just this week.
Officials suspect that the trader might have premeditated his activities and are currently looking into possible accusations of fraud, misappropriation of funds, and other related offenses.
It is said that the suspected fraudster continued to work with clients even while in concealment, as the business was collapsing around him.
