Being a fan who frequently indulges in true crime series on streaming platforms like Netflix, I often consider myself well-versed in notorious crimes and criminals, such as Charles Manson. However, there are moments when even I am taken aback, disheartened, and left puzzled, and that was exactly the case when I recently tuned in to watch “Chaos: The Manson Murders“.
In this 90-minute documentary produced by Errol Morris, who’s won an Academy Award for his work in documentaries like “The Fog of War” and “The Thin Blue Line,” we’re not only taken through the Tate-LaBianca murders and the Manson Family, but also given a unique angle on the events by proposing an intriguing theory about what might have caused it. I simply can’t help but discuss it!
The Theory Involving The CIA, MKUltra, And Charles Manson Is By Far The Most Out There
As a captivated viewer, I found myself immersed in the 2025 Netflix documentary titled “CHAOS: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties,” similar to the book with the same title by Tom O’Neill and Dan Piepenbring. This riveting production delves into various theories, but consistently returns to one that suggests a connection between the CIA, the MKUltra program, and the Manson Family. Although it’s never explicitly confirmed whether or not Charles Manson was intentionally or unintentionally involved in the CIA’s mind-control project, this documentary raises some intriguing questions about unusual events and coincidences surrounding these elements.
The theory isn’t supported by solid evidence or proof, but it’s suggested in the documentary that Manson and his followers often visited a clinic in San Francisco, which was also where Dr. Louis “Jolly” West, a psychiatrist, had his office. There are moments in the film that imply he may have been connected to the MKUltra program, although this is unsubstantiated. Additionally, the documentary raises questions about why Manson, who was a free man at the time, could repeatedly break parole without facing serious repercussions in the years leading up to the 1969 murders.
Additionally, it’s proposed that he learned the brutal methods he employed to instigate his followers into killing seven individuals across two consecutive days from a particular training or influence.

I Don’t Know If It’s True Or Not, But The Documentary Did Offer A Different Interpretation Of The Heinous Crimes
Instead of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” this new documentary concludes tragically with Sharon Tate and others being viciously murdered in one of the 20th century’s most notorious crimes. As for the claims that Manson was connected to the CIA’s mind-control program or used brainwashing techniques on his followers, I’m not entirely convinced, but I found the idea intriguing and thought-provoking.
Sure thing!
Chaos explores two main themes: first, the cult leader manipulating events to provoke a racial conflict called Helter Skelter; second, Manson being unaware that Terry Melcher, his former collaborator, no longer resided at the house in question. On the other hand, the connection between the CIA, MKUltra, and mind control is what primarily comes to mind for me.
As a film enthusiast captivated by the intricacies of cinema, I can confidently say that regardless of your stance on Charles Manson, true crime, or conspiracy theories, the documentary Chaos: The Manson Murders is undeniably one of Netflix’s finest offerings in recent times.
