Diosnel Alarcon, the head of the cybercrime unit of Paraguay’s National Police, recently revealed that over $4 billion was funneled through cryptocurrency scams and Ponzi schemes during 2023 and 2024. He pointed out that these scams flourished due to middlemen, as most investors don’t know the first thing about crypto.
Oh, the magic of cryptocurrency scams! In a world where dreams are sold on the promise of riches, Paraguay seems to have become the new gold rush. And no, it’s not a shiny mine, it’s a digital trap! 😏 Over $4 billion was moved around by these Ponzi schemes between 2023 and 2024, and guess what? It’s all thanks to the good old trickery of middlemen and a complete lack of knowledge about crypto. Brilliant, right?
According to Diosnel Alarcon, the brave soul heading up the cybercrime division of Paraguay’s National Police, these scams are running wild, fueled by social networks and exchange platforms. Who needs actual gold when you can just fabricate shiny platforms online? 🙃
Alarcon, during a recent, no-doubt thrilling interview, explained that victims were drawn into these scams by the tantalizing promise of “huge returns.” So, they invested their hard-earned cash, believing they’d soon be sipping margaritas on a beach somewhere—only to end up with fake accounts full of nothing but digital dust. 🏖️
He said:
They create these fake platforms, lure victims in with tiny profits, and then watch them wait for months before realizing they’ve been bamboozled. Classic. 🤡
Alarcon further clarified that while the scam platforms may not have started in Paraguay, they sure made great use of the country as a transit point. Foreign scammers found Paraguay’s financial systems an ideal place to move their ill-gotten gains. Just like a well-oiled machine, the funds passed through Paraguayan accounts before vanishing into the ether. 🕵️♂️
And while Alarcon didn’t exactly spill the beans on how these figures were calculated, he did mention that specialized companies helped piece it all together. They must be busy—because tracing crypto movements might be easy, but getting the money back? Well, that’s a different story, especially when foreign governments and companies are involved in the bureaucracy circus. 🎪
However, Alarcon remains optimistic. If authorities get the heads up quickly, there’s a fighting chance to halt these scams before the digital cash makes its way out of the country through cryptocurrency exchanges or the ever-so-trustworthy fiat movement. Who knows, maybe the scammers will be the ones waiting for months to realize they’ve been caught! 😂
