As a dedicated fan who’s been riding the rollercoaster of emotions that is Chicago P.D., I must say, the latest season finale was a gut-wrenching masterpiece. Gloria’s demise was heartbreaking and Torres’ struggle felt all too real. But it wasn’t just the tragic twist that left an imprint; it was the unexpected confrontation between Voight and Deputy Chief Reid that had me on the edge of my seat.
In the final episodes of Chicago P.D., there’s often an unexpected and deadly turn, and the last episode from the 2024 TV lineup was no exception as Gloria met her demise. Torres never would have had a joyful conclusion with Gloria present, but her death was heart-wrenching for him, and Benjamin Levy Aguilar delivered an exceptional performance. The scene that lingers in my memory isn’t the gruesome twist for Gloria, though, but rather Deputy Chief Reid challenging Voight. I’m hoping that Shawn Hatosy’s character will prove to be a formidable adversary for the Intelligence Unit sergeant when they return in the 2025 TV schedule.
Despite the team’s morale being low due to Torres’ breakdown and no one seeming overly enthusiastic, the operation appeared successful on paper with the substantial amount of drugs, money confiscated, and criminals off the streets. (You can catch the fall finale by subscribing to Peacock.) Upon his return to the office, Voight found Reid waiting for him, and in a roundabout way, the Deputy Chief hesitated before asking why Reid was there. Eventually, Reid dropped all formalities, confessing that he had something important to discuss.
It seems that Officer Torres was engaged in a forbidden romantic involvement with his Confidential Informant, a fact which Detective Burgess was aware of and participated in. Over the last couple of days, your team has been working diligently to conceal this entire situation. Can I have your thoughts on this matter, Sergeant?
A viewer who has been following the show “Chicago P.D.” for several seasons might anticipate that Voight wouldn’t easily succumb when Reid presented evidence against him and his team. Instead, Voight inquired about the absence of IAD during the arrest of Torres, Detective Burgess, and Voight himself. In response, Reid questioned why IAD wasn’t present for the arrest.
I’d like to use the info differently. I’d like you and I to be friends.
It seems to me that Reid’s concept of camaraderie with Voight might not involve casual conversations over drinks at Molly’s; instead, it may entail power plays and manipulation, as we witnessed earlier in Season 12 when he pressured Burgess into accepting his demands and staying in Intelligence as a detective. Considering that a superior officer harboring secrets about the team is generally detrimental, I find the prospect of Voight encountering a formidable rival within the Chicago Police Department who holds a higher rank intriguing.
I’m not always the biggest believer when One Chicago goes hard on how much Voight cares about his officers after what Upton went through when keeping his secret, but Voight going to bat for his team against a higher-up? I’m so on board, and Shawn Hatosy has been a great addition to the cast as Reid. We also haven’t really had a higher-up with ambiguous loyalties since Chief O’Neal back in Season 10, so I have high hopes for some juicy drama out of whatever Reid has planned for Voight and Co. when Chicago P.D. returns.
Regrettably, the teaser for the winter premiere appears to hold back on revealing any specifics, but it seems promising that it will deliver a thrilling experience. Don’t miss it!
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that starting next Wednesday, January 8, at 10 p.m. ET, my favorite show, Chicago P.D., will be back on NBC! The excitement begins after Chicago Fire wraps up its Cruz cliffhanger at 9 p.m. ET and Chicago Med presents a challenging situation for Steven Weber’s Archer at 8 p.m. ET.
