Last year, Jelly Roll acted as a guide for contestants on American Idol. This time around, he’s stepping into a more significant role within the show.
The well-known country musician has been designated as the inaugural “artist in residence” for the talent show. This is a fresh development: Jelly Roll will start collaborating with the show from the Hollywood Week round, where the initial eliminations for winners of the audition rounds occur. ABC states that he’ll provide personal guidance to the Idol contestants, helping them understand the process better.
Jelly Roll, with his extensive experience in the music industry spanning nearly two decades, starting as a hip-hop artist, appears well-equipped to guide contestants through sudden fame. Although he didn’t achieve mainstream success until his country album “Whitsitt Chapel” reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2023, last year’s “Beautifully Broken” even managed to reach No. 1.
This season, the artist in residence role marks another substantial shift for American Idol. Notably, Carrie Underwood – who many consider the most successful American Idol winner thus far – has been added as a judge, joining Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. She steps into the position previously held by Katy Perry, who decided to part ways with the show last year.
On March 2, following the Oscars on ABC, there will be a 30-minute sneak peek of American Idol. The official start of its eighth season on ABC (which is actually its 23rd overall) will take place on March 9.
