As a seasoned analyst with over two decades of experience in the financial industry, observing the recent activity of the Bitcoin whale wallet from 2009 has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. This is not just another ordinary wallet; it’s a time capsule from the infancy of the cryptocurrency era, when BTC was practically worthless.
A wallet filled with cryptocurrency mined during the first two months following Bitcoin‘s debut has recently been activated after more than a decade of inactivity.
On September 24th, Arkham, a blockchain intelligence firm, identified a Bitcoin (BTC) wallet that had mined Bitcoins back in February and March of 2009. In simpler terms, this miner was operating during the early stages of Bitcoin’s launch, when the cryptocurrency market was still in its nascent stage, and the value of BTC was virtually zero.
After initial transactions in the first few years, the Satoshi-era wallet went dormant.
It appears that the whale’s wallet has become active recently. Its most recent transaction involved transferring five Bitcoins to the cryptocurrency exchange, Kraken.
From $474k to over $80 million
According to Arkham, this suddenly active wallet still holds 1,215 BTC, worth over $77 million.
In 2014, the whale last shifted the coins, and the worth of their holdings was approximately $474,000 at that time. However, due to a substantial rise in Bitcoin’s price over the past decade, the value has grown to an astounding $80 million now.
From 2011-2014, he had relocated multiple times, leaving his Bitcoin untouched for nearly a decade – a period during which its value skyrocketed from $474,000 to over $80 million.
Recently awakened approximately 3 weeks ago, this ‘whale’ has transferred 10 Bitcoins to Kraken in three distinct transactions so far.

By the way, this whale has been quite busy over the past three weeks, having moved approximately 10 Bitcoins to Kraken in three distinct transactions.
In the same fashion as other wallets developed during that period, this wallet also participated in mining Bitcoin while Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, was still doing so and active within the system. Transactions such as this one, involving addresses from those early times, have sparked interest among the BTC community.
Just last week, another Satoshi-era wallet woke, transferring nearly $16 million in BTC. This particular wallet had been dormant for over 15 years.
In August of 2024, a Bitcoin wallet that had been dormant since 2014 transferred over 10.2 million dollars’ worth of Bitcoin. Previously, in June, a Bitcoin wallet which hadn’t been active since 2010 moved 3 million dollars’ worth of Bitcoin to the cryptocurrency exchange Binance.
