Bitfinex hacker sentenced to 5 years in prison for extracting nearly 120k BTC

As a seasoned crypto investor and tech-savvy individual who has been navigating this digital frontier since its inception, I must say that the recent sentencing of Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein serves as both a reminder and a lesson for all participants in this dynamic world.

Federal Judge in Washington has handed down a five-year prison sentence to Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein, who stands accused of illegally obtaining billions in Bitcoin from the cryptocurrency exchange, Bitfinex.

Based on Bloomberg’s report, Lichtenstein received his verdict from the Federal Court in Washington on November 14. The punishment given to him mirrors the tougher sentence that prosecutors had sought for the Bitfinex hacker. This was because they argued for a harsher penalty for his money laundering activities compared to his wife, social media rapper Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan, who was suggested to serve 18 months in prison.

Based on sentencing rules, the hacker initially could have been imprisoned for up to 20 years. However, his term was lessened because he testified as a crucial government witness in multiple cybercrime cases, offering significant help to investigators.

In February 2024, one case where Lichtenstein provided testimony centered around a money laundering trial, specifically involving a bitcoin tumbling service named Bitcoin Fog.

In collaboration with his wife who is a rapper, Lichtenstein allegedly gained unauthorized access to the crypto exchange platform Bitfinex and managed to steal approximately 119,754 Bitcoins. At the time of the theft, this amount of Bitcoin was valued at around $71 million. However, due to the recent surge in Bitcoin’s value, it has reached as high as $93,000 per coin within the past week following the release of the U.S. Consumer Price Index report.

Given the present market value, the Bitcoin mined by Liechtenstein is now valued above 10.5 billion US dollars. At the moment, each Bitcoin is being exchanged for approximately 88,158 US dollars.

As a “computer whiz,” Lichtenstein infiltrated the Bitfinex system in 2016. Following this, he approved over 2,000 Bitcoin transfers into a digital wallet associated with the hacker. Beyond the Bitfinex breach, Lichtenstein has a background of intruding upon accounts on other prominent cryptocurrency platforms such as Coinbase and Kraken.

In the year 2020, Morgan learned that her spouse had been involved in the Bitfinex heist. Consequently, she took steps to conceal the ill-gotten Bitcoin by employing various tactics like buying Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), gold, and Walmart gift cards.

Furthermore, it is alleged that the pair employed complex strategies to conceal their financial transactions and render them undetectable. These tactics reportedly included dealing with unlicensed cryptocurrency platforms and clandestine online marketplaces.

On November 18th, Morgan will learn her punishment. Similar to her husband’s case, there’s a possibility that Morgan’s sentence may be lessened due to her collaboration. However, she still risks serving up to five years in prison for her role in plotting to deceive the United States government.
