As a seasoned cybersecurity analyst with extensive experience in the cryptocurrency industry, I find the recent news of the Lykke crypto exchange suffering a significant loss due to a cyberattack deeply concerning. The reported theft of over $22 million worth of crypto assets is a stark reminder of the increasing risks and vulnerabilities in this space.

In early June, more than $22 million in cryptocurrencies were taken from the digital wallet of U.K.-based exchange Lykke.

A cyberattack on Lykke, a UK-based cryptocurrency exchange, resulted in over $22 million in losses reported by the company.

On June 10, X’s crypto exchange admitted in a blog post that it had experienced a cyberattack on its infrastructure on June 4. This disclosure came after web3 threats researcher, going by the handle @somaxbt, revealed the breach in a series of posts on X. During the attack, an unidentified entity managed to take out 158 Bitcoins and 2,161 Ethereums from the exchange’s wallet.

On June 4th, the cryptocurrency account managed by @lykke CTX was unfortunately exploited, resulting in a loss of approximately $19.5 million in crypto assets. Despite this setback, the team is currently working to disclose this information transparently.

At present, the exchange has paused transactions, including withdrawals and deposits, as a precautionary step without specifying when normal activities will resume. According to Lykke’s announcement on their website, the platform will remain “dormant” until more information becomes available.

The most recent crypto heist is currently the second largest in Q2 2023, coming after the $300 million hack on Japanese Bitcoin exchange DMM that occurred on May 31. Initially, DMM announced the theft of over 4,500 BTC from customer wallets and vowed to refund in full. Subsequently, they disclosed their intention to secure $320 million to make good on their promise to the affected users.
