Buterin outlines next steps for Ethereum’s proof-of-stake evolution

These improvements primarily target aspects such as achieving definitive confirmation in a single slot, boosting the accessibility of staking, and encouraging greater involvement of validators.

Although the Merge, a crucial update switching Ethereum’s consensus mechanism from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake, has been successfully accomplished, Vitalik Buterin, one of its co-founders, points out that there are still significant aspects where proof-of-stake needs further enhancement.

On his Monday blog update, October 14th, Buterin underscored that significant advancements are still required to tackle potential centralization issues and boost overall system performance. The proposed plan separates technical upgrades, like enhancing stability and accessibility for validators, from economic adjustments designed to combat centralization.

One major area highlighted is the desire for single-slot finality, which would reduce the current block finalization time from 15 minutes to just 12 seconds (or even four seconds), a change that would “significantly improve the user experience both of the layer-1 and of based rollups, while making decentralized finance protocols more efficient.”

Another pressing concern is staking democratization. Currently, a minimum of 32 ETH (around $81,500 at current prices) is required to participate in staking, a serious limitation, to which Buterin suggested lowering the threshold down to 1 ETH in an effort to increase solo staking participation.

Repeated surveys indicate that the primary obstacle for many people participating in solo staking is the 32 ETH minimum requirement. Lowering it to 1 ETH might alleviate this problem significantly, making other factors more influential in determining who can stake solo.

To accomplish these improvements, Buterin suggested various methods. One possible approach, often called “raw power,” centers around enhancing signature aggregation by possibly implementing ZK-SNARKs. This technique allows for the handling of signatures from numerous validators within each time period or “slot.

Moreover, he proposed the idea of “rotating verification groups,” where medium-sized teams chosen at random would be responsible for verifying and completing the chain, ensuring strong security protocols were in place.

In terms of addressing staking difficulties, Buterin proposed a “two-layered staking” structure. This setup would have two types of stakers: one group requiring larger deposits and the other needing smaller amounts. This strategy aims to foster a more inclusive environment for participants, while at the same time, guaranteeing economic finality by ensuring that the system remains economically sound.
