Oh look, Circle’s decided to join the party. As of April 21st, they’ve officially thrown their hat into the payments ring with something they’re calling the Circle Payments Network (CPN). And no, it’s not some obscure tech startup. It’s going straight for Ripple. Yep, a full-on, face-to-face battle between the new kid on the block and Ripple’s “vintage” decade-old Ripple Payments (formerly On-Demand Liquidity – or ODL, if you’re into abbreviations). How fun.
Circle Struts into Payments: A New Era, Apparently
Circle took to X (formerly Twitter—because apparently, rebranding is a thing) to announce CPN, describing it as “the streamlined way” to move money across the globe. Apparently, this will be powered by stablecoins like USDC and EURC, making transactions as fast as you can click a mouse. Circle promises all the good stuff: programmability, constant availability, and “internet-speed” settlement (because we all know how patient the internet is). CPN’s initial offerings cover the basics: invoice settlement, remittances, treasury flows, and payroll. Oh, and don’t worry, over 20 institutions are already jumping on the bandwagon as design partners. Someone’s popular.
Until now, Circle has played it safe, sticking to being the bigwig behind USDC, the second-largest dollar stablecoin. But with CPN, they’ve decided to own the rail, too. This new protocol layer is essentially a fully-fledged internet-based settlement system, using USDC, EURC, and eventually other regulated stablecoins. Sounds like a recipe for success—or at least an expensive startup conference.
Circle’s governance role is… well, a little controlling, but hey, it’s their network. They’ll be the ones setting the rules, enforcing compliance, and generally making sure everyone plays nice. To join, participating financial institutions (PFIs) have to meet some pretty strict licensing and anti-money laundering standards. Circle is the boss here, so don’t even think about cutting corners.
Technically, CPN is off-chain for now, broadcasting signed transfers to public blockchains, but eventually it will evolve into a fully on-chain protocol. In its dream form, stablecoin swaps, liquidity discovery, and even settlement guarantees will happen without breaking a sweat. Plus, if you’re really into privacy, they’re offering optional “undo” windows and confidentiality features. Because, who doesn’t love a little mystery in finance?
For banks, payment processors, and virtual asset providers, CPN offers clear pricing: payout fees, FX spreads, and a variable network fee. But wait, there’s more! Circle promises to reinvest part of the revenue into infrastructure upgrades and developer grants. The aim? A marketplace full of value-added modules—from custody to fraud analytics. Circle is basically setting up a financial playground, hoping everyone gets a little richer and smarter. Everybody wins, right?
Circle Vs. Ripple: Round 1
The battle lines are drawn. Circle’s CPN directly competes with Ripple’s payments network. You’ll notice some overlap: several of CPN’s first-wave partners, including Alfred, BVNK, CoinMENA, and WorldRemit, also use Ripple Payments. Looks like Ripple’s cornered some competition. Cue the dramatic music.
Even Panos Mekras, co-founder of Anodos Finance, saw the writing on the wall. “Ok, this is big. Circle just launched a direct Ripple competitor… Game is on,” he said. Oh, and Xoom, a community member, couldn’t resist throwing in their two cents: “Competition results in more growth & innovation.” Well, isn’t that a nice, optimistic way to look at it?
But wait, there’s more. Ian Lee, co-founder of Syndicate DAO, took a more strategic view: “This is going after what Ripple and XRP were supposed to, but with stablecoins. It’s got a better shot at success since it’s more in line with how financial institutions work.” Ouch. A burn, but fair. Stablecoins are definitely more of a fit for the existing financial ecosystem. Good luck, Ripple!
And just for fun, here’s one last juicy tidbit: As of press time, XRP was trading at $2.09. Might want to keep an eye on that, because things are about to get interesting.
