A moderator who volunteers for a cryptocurrency discussion platform is reportedly in seclusion with his loved ones following a suspected kidnap attempt, as stated in an article from Quebec’s La Presse.
It appears that the individuals under suspicion thought the man had a significant amount of Bitcoin (BTC), estimated to be in the millions. However, he asserts that his actual Bitcoin holdings were approximately $10,000.
As reported by La Presse, the sequence of events started in early November, with two masked individuals showing up at his house. A few days after that, while taking his daughter to daycare, he spotted some hooded figures in a black car lurking around his home.
An encounter ensued, resulting in the apprehension of four individuals under suspicion. Two of these individuals, being minors, were accused of devising a plan to abduct an individual and coerce him into revealing his cryptocurrency wallet’s access code.
Conspiracy to kidnap
The individuals without any previous convictions were accused of plotting kidnapping and violating firearms laws.
Initially, they were granted home confinement before their upcoming trial in March. Simultaneously, the authorities recommended that the individual consider moving residences because some of the suspects had links to criminal organizations.
Currently, this man is living in various temporary homes for the sake of safeguarding his family. To make matters more complex, the Youth Protection Department of Quebec has become involved because of worries regarding the safety of his kids.
It’s not the initial instance of a significant security breach involving cryptocurrencies in Canada. In November, the corpse of a 25-year-old influential figure in the cryptocurrency world, Kevin Mirshahi, who had been missing since June, was discovered in Montreal’s Île-de-la-Visitation Park. The authorities identified him following an autopsy, making it the 32nd homicide in Montreal for the year of 2024 and sparking worries about the escalating violence within the crypto community.
In November, I found myself in an unsettling situation as the CEO of WonderFi, Dean Skurka, was kidnapped in the bustling heart of Toronto during rush hour. Thankfully, he was safely freed following the payment of a $1 million ransom electronically.
