“Crypto Scammers Strike Again: Over 13k Wallets Compromised!”
Oh joy, oh rapture! Another delightful day in the world of cryptocurrency, where the only thing more plentiful than the digital coins themselves is the number of scammers trying to relieve you of them! 🤑
According to the fine folks at SlowMist, a malicious mobile app called BOM has been siphoning sensitive wallet data from users’ devices, leading to the theft of a whopping $1.8 million in cryptocurrency. Because who needs security when you can have a nice chunk of change, right? 😂
Here’s how it worked: the scammers created a fake app that asked for all sorts of unnecessary permissions, like access to your photos and media. Because, you know, a blockchain-related app absolutely needs to see your cat pictures to function properly. 📸
“On iOS, the app first requests permissions, deceiving users with a message claiming the access is necessary for normal operation. This behavior is highly suspicious — as a blockchain-related application, it has no legitimate reason to require access to the photo gallery.”
SlowMist
SlowMist tracked the stolen funds across multiple blockchains, estimating that the main hacker address (0x49aDd3E…) swiped assets from at least 13,000 victims and transferred the funds through BNB Chain, Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, and Coinbase’s Base. Because who needs a social life when you can have a social engineering scam, am I right? 🤣
The stolen crypto included Tether (USDT), Ethereum (ETH), Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), and Dogecoin (DOGE). Because who doesn’t love a good mix of stablecoins and meme coins, right? 🐕
While it’s unclear who’s behind the scheme, SlowMist analysts pointed out that the app’s backend services were offline during analysis, suggesting the attackers are already trying to cover their tracks. Some funds were swapped on decentralized exchange platforms such as PancakeSwap and OKX-DEX. Because who needs a paper trail when you can have a blockchain one, right? 📊
