CZ talks about making friends in prison in new interview

Previously incarcerated Binance CEO, Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao, discussed his experiences behind bars and offered perspectives on the cryptocurrency sector’s future during his initial post-release interview.

During Binance Blockchain Week in Dubai on October 31st, Zhao reminisced about his four-month imprisonment, expressing that what he yearned for most was genuine human interaction. He disclosed that he formed bonds with several fellow inmates, referring to many as “really kind individuals” and hinting that some were serving time unjustly.

Despite being in prison, he managed to rectify the situation by befriending fellow inmates whom he considered “very kind individuals.” He acknowledged that many of them had found themselves in such a position unfairly.

During my time in prison, I encountered several kind individuals. Remarkably, none of the inmates caused me any problems. While some guards were somewhat strict, I didn’t face any issues with them either. In this context, I consider myself fortunate as I managed to avoid any physical harm.

Many of them had sentences that covered multiple years, whereas CZ’s own sentence was merely a few months in length. Interestingly, he didn’t have a point of comparison to determine if his sentence was “fair,” as he was the first individual ever imprisoned for breaking the Banking Secrecy Act.

Though he did mention that other financial entities like TD Bank also pleaded guilty for violating the Banking Secrecy Act but only received a fine of $1.8 billion.

In simpler terms, “CZ stated that some executives received money in exchange for making deals, but no individuals were specifically punished; instead, only the company was penalized with a fine totaling 1.8 billion dollars. However, whether this is fair or not, it’s not of great concern to him.

It’s been confirmed that Zhao relinquished his position as the CEO of Binance, which means he can no longer participate in decision-making or day-to-day activities. Yet, he still holds the privileges that come with being a substantial shareholder.

My initial month here has been challenging. It’s been an emotional transition, as I spent seven years investing my heart and soul into a company that I’m now leaving behind. However, I’ve always believed that a CEO shouldn’t hold their position for over a decade because the world is constantly evolving.

Currently, CZ has expressed no desire to spearhead any projects or businesses. Instead, he’s choosing to invest his time in educating himself about cutting-edge topics such as artificial intelligence and mentoring budding entrepreneurs who are eager to embark on new ventures.

CZ stated that they could assist them in various ways such as providing funds, offering guidance, coaching, mentoring, and even connecting them to additional resources and contacts, should they desire it.

Beyond this, he mentioned his intention to keep pouring resources into ventures, particularly those centered around blockchain technology, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology. Furthermore, he’s keen on expanding his educational endeavor, Giggle Academy.

When queried about the future prospects of cryptocurrency over the coming years, CZ expressed continued optimism towards its long-term potential. However, he noted that predicting short-term trends is more challenging.

He sees 2024 as a “year of recovery” given the present circumstances and his understanding of the recurring patterns in the crypto market over the last 12 years. Regarding 2025, he’s quite positive about its prospects for cryptocurrency.

“One year is really hard to predict. But I think there’s a high chance that, you know, the future follows the history. So then we would be in a pretty good place,” said CZ.
