CZ’s Canine Conundrum: Broccoli’s Bizarre BNB Bonanza

Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, the former Binance CEO, found himself in the midst of a peculiar situation as he became the unwitting muse for a new meme coin. The cryptocurrency community, ever the speculators, clamoured for a contracted address to trade the token inspired by Zhao’s beloved Belgian Malinois, Broccoli.

Developers, it seems, have a penchant for canine-themed tokens, particularly those based on the pets owned by popular founders like Zhao. CZ had earlier shared details about his dog, including its name and breed, sparking a frenzy around his social media posts.

As traders buzzed around the opportunity to profit from CZ’s public posts, PancakeSwap, native to Binance Chain, outpaced Uniswap, the leading decentralized exchange on Ethereum. Alas, the hopes of investing in Zhao’s meme coin were dashed shortly after.

CZ emphasized that he wouldn’t drop a contract address or launch a meme coin. “Let the best meme coin in the community win,” Zhao tweeted. Nevertheless, several tokens based on CZ’s dog, Broccoli, emerged, with one issued on BNB Chain amassing a $90 million market capitalization.

Zhao’s response to community requests for his dog’s name, and subsequent tokenization of the pet, happened months after the former Binance CEO scrutinized the rampant rise of meme coins. Last November, CZ called for a refocus on on-chain utility.

Broccoli’s Story
