As a seasoned crypto investor with a knack for spotting opportunities and a flair for internet culture, I find the launch of .APE top-level domain names by D3 Global an intriguing development. Having navigated the digital landscape since the early days of Bitcoin, I’ve seen the potential for blockchain technology to revolutionize various aspects of our lives, and domains are no exception.
3D Global, a leading company in the web3 domain sector, has unveiled top-level domain names specifically designed for the ApeCoin community.
On October 22, a company announcement revealed that the ApeCoin (APE) system is now able to utilize ‘.ape’ domain names on the recently developed layer-2 solution, ApeChain.
The Ape Names project marks the beginning of efforts aimed at providing a unified naming system compatible with cryptocurrency users.
Community approved .APE domain names proposal
D3’s introduction of .APE domain names is based on a proposal for top-level domain names that was endorsed by the ApeCoin community earlier this year. This decision coincides with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers’ plans to introduce new generic TLDs over the next two years.
Based on D3’s announcement, users can now acquire and use tokenized Ape Names as identifiers in the web3 environment, with the .APE top-level domains. This functionality is accessible before the upcoming ICANN application round.
Essentially, ApeCoin owners have the flexibility to utilize their tokenized names in a variety of ways, such as for personal email addresses, digital wallet addresses, identifiers within decentralized infrastructure, or even as unique usernames on web3 platforms.
It’s crucial to have a unified, versatile naming system that bolsters the expansion of the APE brand and its community, while also providing long-term functionality for users. The APE Foundation is thrilled to collaborate closely with D3 in developing the future internet landscape, ensuring it remains ‘Apes by Apes’.
Gerard Hernandez, APE Foundation special council
D3 plans to provide APE domain names to its token owners, and these will later become accessible to the wider public as well.
Presently, D3 collaborates with multiple blockchain-based user groups, such as Shiba Inu, Magic Eden, NEAR Protocol, Own The Doge, and Core DAO.
Beyond D3’s popularity in the cryptocurrency sphere, other entities facilitating the integration of domain names for crypto users are GoDaddy, Ethereum Name Service (ENS), and Unstoppable Domains. In February, GoDaddy and ENS joined forces to offer .eth domain names to their community.
