Ethereum’s Final Stand

The Ethereum Foundation, bless their hearts, has announced a new testnet called Hoodi 🤪. Seems they had a couple of “hiccups”, shall we say, while trying to test the Pectra upgrade on the Sepolia and Holesky testnets. Those poor things, they encountered some configuration issues that left them looking like a toddler who spilled their alphabet soup 🤪.

Hoodi is set to launch on March 17th, and it’s supposed to be the final test run before Pectra goes live on the mainnet. Let’s hope it doesn’t end up like a bad dinner party with all the guests fleeing in terror. 😅

Ethereum To Launch New Testnet

Pectra, you see, is supposed to make Ethereum faster, more efficient, and, dare I say, a little more user-friendly. It’s like giving Ethereum a makeover, hoping it’ll attract a younger crowd. 💃 The big news is the addition of smart contract functionality to addresses. Now, imagine your wallet as a tiny little computer program! You could program it to do all sorts of neat things, like paying transaction fees in other currencies besides ETH. Who knows, maybe you could even have it order you coffee! ☕

Pectra will be tested on the Hoodi testnet on March 26th, and if it all goes smoothly, Ethereum users can expect the upgrade to launch on the mainnet by April or May.

“A new testnet, Hoodi, is going live Monday to wrap up Pectra testing. If you need to test validator exits, be on the lookout for it! Everything else can be tested on Sepolia & Holesky. Pectra will be scheduled 30+ days after Hoodi forks successfully, pending infra and client testing. Fusaka planning will run in parallel, with a deadline of March 24 to propose EIPs and a tentative date of April 10 for a scope freeze.”

Tim Beiko, the coordinator of the Ethereum ecosystem’s core developers at the Ethereum Foundation, seems quite optimistic, but I wouldn’t get too excited just yet. 😜

Complications On Sepolia and Holesky

The Hoodi testnet was created after complications with testing Pectra on the Sepolia and Holesky testnets. It’s like they had to bring in a therapist to help them work through their issues. 😅

Holesky even went offline for several weeks because of the flawed tests. Imagine that, the test network is down for maintenance because it couldn’t handle a little upgrade. Talk about a bad Yelp review! 😫

Test networks like Sepolia, Holesky, and Hoodi are identical to the Ethereum mainnet, but they are free to use and don’t have any real value. It’s like the practice range for Ethereum. They test out upgrades on these test networks before deploying them on the mainnet, because, well, you wouldn’t want the real thing to crash, would you? 😂

The Pectra setback comes at a rather difficult time for Ethereum. It’s facing a lot of pressure with declining ETH prices, leadership transitions at the Ethereum Foundation, and skepticism about its ability
