The long-awaited Pectra update for Ethereum is expected to be rolled out by the close of Q1 in 2025, despite the fact that its extensive scope has caused some delays from the original schedule. Near completion, this major overhaul encompasses both Ethereum’s execution and consensus layers.
A significant aspect of this update involves the EVM Object Format (EOF), comprised of 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). These proposals introduce an “opt-in” system for EVM code using a container system. This modularity will make future upgrades and efficiency enhancements simpler. However, implementing EOF has presented challenges, resulting in setbacks for Pectra.

Pectra has two primary parts: Prague at the execution level and Electra at the consensus level. The exact boundaries are still under debate, with some considering postponing Verkle trees until after the future Osaka hard fork.
