As a seasoned researcher with a background in media studies and digital policy, I find myself closely following the evolving dynamics between Elon Musk, his social media platform X, and European regulators. The latest warning from Thierry Breton of the EU Commission is yet another intriguing chapter in this complex narrative.
As a researcher, I’m sharing an update on a recent development regarding Elon Musk and his social media platform, X. Earlier today, the European Union Commission issued a warning to me (Elon Musk) concerning my platform. This warning comes at a time when I am about to conduct an interview with former U.S. President Donald Trump, which is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET today.
In a recent correspondence, EU Commission member Thierry Breton brought up some apprehensions regarding potential dissemination of harmful content on the platform during interviews. He also reminded Elon Musk about the responsibilities the platform is bound to under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The EU’s main concern is that the interview could lead to the sharing of content that might cause public unrest. With around 300 million users on X, many of whom are in the EU, the Commission is urging Musk to take necessary precautions to prevent such outcomes.
Breton underlined the importance of finding a harmony on the platform; it should support free speech while maintaining security, particularly during significant events.
In a recent correspondence, the letter highlighted past occurrences linking content related to X with disorderly situations in the public domain. It emphasized the necessity for careful monitoring and appropriate handling of such content to maintain order. Breton underscored that the platform should comply with EU regulations to prevent any potential fines or repercussions.
Responding to the caution, Musk playfully greeted with a short “Good day!” on X, thereby amplifying the persistent friction between him and European authorities.
Bonjour!

One of the many regulatory hurdles that Musk has encountered in Europe is this specific warning, with another recent instance being an investigation in Austria concerning potential privacy infractions.
With the interview with Trump looming nearer, I find myself eagerly anticipating the discourse that’s to unfold, particularly on subjects such as cryptocurrencies, artificial intelligence, and the myriad of technological challenges we face.
