🚨 French Authors & Publishers Sue Meta for Stealing Their Intellectual Property (Again) 🤦♂️
And so, the never-ending tale of “I didn’t steal it, I just borrowed it” continues. A collective of French authors and publishers, because who needs personal integrity when you can sue someone, have taken Meta to court over the great AI content heist. It seems the social media giant, which also owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has been “training” its AI models using the original content of artists without so much as a “Bonjour, madame, I’d like to use your work, s’il vous plaît.” 🙄
According to Vincent Montagne, president and CEO of the French publishers association, they’ve noticed a plethora of works from their members popping up in Meta’s data pool. One can only imagine the thrill of seeing their life’s work being used to train AI models without their consent. 🤯 It’s like finding out your cat has been using your keyboard to write a novel. 🐈
The lawsuit, filed by the National Publishing Union, the National Union of Authors and Composers, and the Society of Men of Letters, accuses Meta of violating intellectual property rights and engaging in “economic parasitism.” Because, you know, nothing says “parasitism” like using someone’s work without paying them. 😒
The general delegate of SNAC, Maia Bensimon, has labeled this incident a “monumental looting” of intellectual property rights. One can only imagine the grandeur of it all. 🏰 Renaud Lefebvre from SNE stressed that this lawsuit is not just about protecting their members, but also about establishing future legal standards. Because, you know, the world needs more lawyers. 🤣
And if you thought Meta was the only one getting sued, think again. OpenAI is also facing lawsuit issues in India, Canada, and the USA for training its highly demanding tool ChatGPT using copyrighted content. It’s like a never-ending game of “AI copyright musical chairs.” 🎶
As AI technology continues to evolve, it’s high time for giants like Meta to draw a line and avoid copyright infringement by AI. The lawsuit presents significant consequences that will impact future AI development practices, specifically concerning training utilizations of copyrighted materials. And by “significant consequences,” I mean Meta will have to pay up. 💸 The plaintiffs advocate for improved safeguards to protect creative intellectual property for its creators. Because, you know, creators need to eat too. 🍴
